  • Giving the cook the boot

The diner where I work at just made some new changes. New hours & days that it'll be open. PLUS getting rid of the cook that's been working there for 4 years. She busted her ass working & did a fairly competent job BUT what did her in was her attitude.
My boss would usually go home around 2 PM after being there since 4 in the morning. & once he left business would take a serious tumble. For a while the boss couldn't figure out why business in the evenings was so slow. It didn't take too long to figure out that the cook was rubbing people the wrong way.
People would come in & she wouldn't say hello or even aknowledge them. Some days she'd be in one of her moods & practically snarl at customers! A lot of people who had been coming there for years decided to go elsewhere cause of her. & if that wasn't bad enough, people would get their orders wrong or their orders would be burnt. & when they told her about it she'd give them attitude. It was like she didn't give a shit.
The straw that finally broke the camel's back was when we were all informed that we couldn't take off for whatever reason in October cause the boss's daughter was gonna have her baby at that time. The boss's daughter works at the diner too. So she'll be gone for about a month or so for maternity leave & while she's gone we'll be short a person.
The cook kept insisting that she needed to have off for a week in October to visit whoever. Boss kept saying no & from what I understand she was gonna just take off anyway & leave them hanging. I'm sorry but you just don't do that!
So the boss took the cook into the office for a long talking to. I was told it wasn't pleasant. She was fired cause of her nasty attitude. That she was affecting the bottom line of the diner was the main reason.
    The NEW cook started yesterday.

From what you have told us about the old cook, I wouldn't have been surprised if she gave the food some "extra flavoring" But seriously, if she's gonna go around treating customers this way, then she won't last long in any job that deals with customers.

At the local grocery store that I'm a regular customer of (and for a local grocery store deli they have FANTASTIC fried chicken, almost as good as the Colonels'!) there is a cook/server there that I refer to as "Terrible Tim" because I only make one small request on my order, that he doesn't give me potato wedges that are too fat (seriously I've almost choked on them when they're too fat) and not only does he give me a very nasty attitude/vibe, but intentionally throws in fat wedges anyway. And as if that wasn't bad enough, a month ago I was in line and witnessed him being all sweet and kind to an elderly lady who apparently also has that same potato wedge preference and he does honor her request. I've tried repeatedly complaining to management and even wrote a few emails to corporate about him and they all just look the other way (whereas I was fired from my last retail job because among other things I was wrongly accused (by a corrupt ASS. manager who selfishly threw me under the bus just to make herself look good) of being bad to the customers when EVERYONE (both regular customers/teammates) who actually saw me in action on a regular basis knew that I was nothing short of a model employee). And before anyone asks (and I'd rather not go into details as to why) NO I cannot just go to another store.

Uh, no no no, and double no. You don't get to cherry pick the customers you treat well. You treat EVERY honest, non-abusive customer with professional courtesy and respect REGARDLESS of how you personally feel about them and you bend over backwards to make sure they're happy. With only the two exceptions I cited in the previous sentence...THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT.

Since you cannot go to another store, see if you can sue this store for discrimination. Talk to a lawyer about what you can or cannot do.

I'd advise talking to a manager. Let them know that you have a problem with some of the wedges being too fat, and that it's a choking risk (read: liability issue), and that when you ask for skinny wedges, Tim deliberately gives you fat ones. If they were careful to make sure NONE of the wedges were too fat, it wouldn't matter how obnoxious Tim was about not honouring requests - and some customers might not know to ask for the thin ones.

Suing for discrimination would probably be a bad move. After all, how do you get court-level proof that Tim honours some people's requests but not yours? "I saw him pick out the thin ones for an elderly lady who made the same request I did" does not constitute proof. It'd be expensive, and there's another issue - you say you can't go to another store. What happens if the store decides that all contact between them and someone suing them must be through the legal department - i.e. bans you from the premises for the period the case is before the court?

Hence the two exceptions I mentioned...in nearly all cases that the customer is wrong it is because they are dishonest and/or abusive in some way.

And I guess I should clairfy why I can't go to another store...both me and my wife are severely disabled (in the legal SSDI recipient sort of way as well) stemming from PTSD from our past childhood abuse (LONG story on both fronts; please do not ask me to go into further details) and unfortunately because my former employer and their lapdog union put me through much of the same kind of abuse (a few years back) it only put my mental/emotional issues over the top. Furthermore my wife has also been very severely disabled physically as well to the point where I must be her 24/7 caregiver so that she doesn't have to live in a nursing home (where even if it's a totally model nursing home with a totally awesome staff, she'll still in the end just be one of several dozen patient serial numbers on a spreadsheet and won't get the kind of one-on-one attention she truly needs). Also my emotional/mental issues are such that it would be very dangerous and unsafe (like if I was to have a flashback or another one of my "spells" while behind the wheel at just the wrong place/time it could be a major disaster) for me be a licensed driver (and we can't afford a vehicle besides). Thus I can only use the local grocery store a couple blocks behind us. And yes they do know this.

Now don't misunderstand me, with that one exception as well as one of their ASS. managers who again for whatever reason just doesn't like me the rest of the staff is totally cool. But it just burns me up that back in 2010 I had my reputation, my career, and nearly my marriage go up in flames because of false allegations while I'm forced to deal with someone who really is being rotten and when I try to politely bring this to management's attention they just look the other way. I guess I'll just have to get our chicken on days he's not there?

No they are not. Not ever. If the jackenassen who came up with this stupid line was still alive I'd drop him in a handy abandoned mine.

You left out the two exceptions I cited just before that. Seriously every bad customer I know of (and I did work in customer service for well over 10 years) was a bad customer because of some combination of dishonesty and/or abusiveness. Luckily I rarely got any of those but boy did I get my fair share of STUPID customers...

This thread reminds me of this comic: Something Positive, 17 Feb 2012

You might want to ask the staff why he acts like this. Then if it's not because he's just discriminating against you on forbidden grounds, see if you can talk to him over coffee when he's on break. Put your foot down and tell him that he should treat you better, and that you will promise to treat him better, too. Not to play devil's advocate, though; I'm sure that you already treat him better than he treated you, but Tim might not see it that way.

This is how my coworker got my attention. He had a mobility disability, and was probably sick and tired of people not listening to him, so when I offered to do things my way, he said "NO! You sit down and listen to me!" He did it in such an authoritative manner, so I did, and listened patiently. As a result, on one of my last days there, sadly, he was the only one to treat me to lunch.

Wouldn't the chicken be considered a choking hazard (read "liability"- if you choose to talk to a manager as suggested by someone else) since i doubt they're pre sliced, diced or pre-chewed. Wedges are supposed to be nice and thick. does the PTSD prevents you from using a knife or fork to cut the wedges in slimmer pieces? just asking since you're making a comment about forgoing the chicken you seem to be very fond of just because of the wedges.
