I am in a very weird position in that my direct manager... doesn't really like me. It's a personality issue, mostly. I have a few conversational faults, and they coincide with her worst pet peeves ever. Trying to talk with my manager is definitely walking on eggshells, trying to curb my natural ways of talking to pretty much a say almost nothing unless directly directed to.

And yet, she hired me for the position, and I accepted.

The reason it's working? She may be a bit unreasonable about her dislikes, but she's blunt as hell about it. She states upfront: this exact thing bugs me, so don't do it. Finding it difficult to converse with her directly, I have also found that emailing works wonderfully with her. And, despite her personal dislike of my personality, she flat out respects the work I do and is just as blunt on letting me know she appreciates it.

Performance review time came along. Way my bank works, your direct manager has discretion to offer up to a 3 % raise (with a maximum total pay amount for each position that slowly raises over time for cost of living). Then they have the Exceeds rating. An Exceeds rating is one of those things on paper that I didn't think actually existed. An Exceeds performance review means that your manager went to THEIR manager and defended your work, stating, "this person has gone far above and beyond". An Exceeds rating means that your manager gets permission from their boss to offer up to a 6% raise.

I have worked for my bank for over 10 years. Every year (but one, and that's another tale) I have had managers who rave about my work, but not one has been willing to go to bat for me for an Exceeds review.

And now, my current manager of 1 year, the manager who doesn't even personally LIKE me, just defended an Exceeds to her manager for me. 6% raise.
