A wedding cake I did for a family friend. (Well, might as well say she's family. My SIL's sister.)
    The wedding is tomorrow.

        Thanks, guys.

I was happy with how it turned out.

It was actually a very plain cake as far as wedding cakes go.

It really didn't give me a lot of chance to show off my skills.
Just make royal icing and ice the cake tiers. Put ribbons around them. Attach bows. Put lace between the tiers to assemble. Pipe on dots for the borders. Assemble plates and pillars and place birds in centre and pipe dots of icing around to hold it in place.

The lace and ribbon and the plastic lovebirds really make the cake, and my icing skill was secondary.

It was what the bride wanted, though.
If I had been more skilled, I would have done the ribbons and lace from rolled fondant or gum paste.

It was about 4-5 hours from start to finish, but I wasn't working at it steady,as there were a few interruptions for 'family' stuff.

I think the stained glass at the top is a very cool idea... I might have to pinch that.

That's so beautiful! It's my dream wedding cake! (Assuming my doctors take me off this carnivore diet on my wedding day so I can eat the cake.)

Heh...the bride said she didn't want a traditional bride and groom cake topper.

I saw a lot of really nice things online, but because they were bridal cake toppers, the price on them was ridiculous. (It's really sad how companies jack up prices just because it's for a wedding.)
Because it's "family" I am not charging what I should, and will likely only charge for the cost of the supplies, so I was trying to keep the cost down.

I was really stumped as to what I was going to put on top, and I actually spent all last weekend looking for something.

Just when I was about to give up and attempt to make something myself out of royal icing and ribbon, I walked into a dollar store, and there was the little stained glass tealight holder in the perfect colours for only $2.

I put a battery operated tealight in it, and it really sets it off, (although a real flame looks nicer, but it's not as safe).
The back plate is a mirror, so it really glows nicely.

I went down to the hall and set it up for them.
The wedding is at 6 pm today.
I took a picture of it all set up, so I know how it looks in its proper setting.

It's minimalist, understated and different - I love it!
Do you have pictures of any other cakes you've done? I would really dig to see them!

For anyone curious...most of the wedding cakes are artifical.
That means they are styrofoam "dummy cakes" covered in icing, so the separator plates that hold the pillars just sit on top.

When it's a real cake, I use dowelling and insert it into the layers at intervals to support the weight of the layer above.

I was surprised to find out about the dowl (sp?) rods being used. I guess because it's wood- I don't know why it surprised me really.
I actually learned that from watching that show on the food network where the chef goes and has throw downs with other chefs.

Was it Iron Chef (original or America), one of the Food Network Challenges (of which several have been different kinds of cake competition), or Bobby Flay's Throwdown?

I was going to say, how can people eat those amazing masterpieces?!

I assume that there is a separate sheet cake made for serving.
