  • "But I was only in the garage for 5 minutes"

There have been times when someone would press the call box, the phone inside the booth rings, & when I answered it they would either say...

they are at the wrong building
they need to be at another building on campus
they were parked in the garage for 5 minutes or for less than 5 minutes

I would tell the person they have to pay the $5.00 to exit, but I would transfer the call to the parking office to see what they would do. When I told whoever answered the phone that the person at the exit gate was told by me that it is $5.00 to exit as well as what the person told me on the phone after they pressed the call box, I was told I could raise the exit gate.

A guy arrives for an appointment. He asks me if he needs to get a token to exit. I say yes. That tells me he knows how things work at the university. He is driving a small black car.

The phone inside the booth rings. I look up, & there is a small black car at the exit gate.

me: "Visitor parking booth. How may I help you?"
guy: "Yeah...I was only parked in the garage for 5 minutes. I found out I am at the wrong address.
me: "Where do you need to be?"
guy: "I need to be at ACC Community College North campus"
    me: "One moment please"

I transfer the call to the parking office. "Melissa" answers the phone. I tell her the entire situation including the fact that he asked me if he has to pay when he arrived & that I told him yes. She tells me he has to pay. Since he was at the exit gate, I hang up the phone for her to speak to him.

I watch to see what happens. I see him look at the call box, but I could not tell if he was speaking to it. He presses the call button again. I transfer the call back to the parking office. I get voice mail. So I call campus police, & tell them the entire situation. At that point I see him press the call button again. I tell the person who answered the phone at campus police that he pressed the call button again. They tell me they will transfer the call to the parking office. I hang up the phone. I see him look at the call box, but I could not tell if he was speaking to it. At that point I see a car behind him. The driver, a female, gets out of that car & walks up to the call box. Since he is not backing up, I call campus police again to let them know what is happening. They tell me a university cop car will arrive soon.

The cop car arrives, & 2 university policemen get out of the car. They walk up to the exit gate to talk to the guy. One of the cops walks back to the booth to speak to me. I tell him the entire situation including what "Melissa" told me as well as the fact that sometimes when I called the parking office regarding a situation like this, I was told to raise the exit gate. The cop walks back to the exit gate & motions for the guy to back up so the cars behind him could exit. He does that, & several cars exit. I notice that the 2 cops are speaking to the guy inside the Visitor parking garage. The guy exits several minutes later.
