  • Visitor parking reserved; female guest wanted campus cop to make an exception

The amount of spots that needed to be reserved were not that many, but due to the cold weather, many people wanted to park. Plus it was very windy outside.

At one point there were only enough parking spots for the reservations that were posted on the Outlook calendar. I called the parking office to have the full sign turned on because the big white sign stating Visitor parking is closed for a special event would not stand upright in front of the Visitor parking entrance gate due to the windy weather.

Female drives up to the Visitor parking booth & tells me "Mr. Johnson told me you can give me a token to exit the garage." I ask her which dept. "Mr. Johnson" works in. She gives me the information, but according to the Outlook calendar, "Mr. Johnson" or anyone in the dept. he works at did not make parking arrangements for anyone. So I tell her "I'm sorry, but I do not have any tokens to give to anyone, & Visitor parking is closed for events, & so I have no parking spots available."

She then says "But he told me to park in Visitor parking. I am here for a meeting. Is there anyway you can help me?"

I tell her "I'm sorry, but I cannot help you."

At that point we both see a campus cop exit the faculty/staff garage, which is adjacent to Vistor parking.

The female flags down the campus cop. He walks up to the Visitor parking booth window & asks me if I called "Mr. Johnson". Ever since I have been working at the university as a parking attendant, I have never been allowed to call the person or dept. that did not make parking arrangements for their guest(s) when Visitor parking was closed for events. I am only allowed to call the dept. over Visitor parking, & currently it is the Parking office. So I told the campus cop "I'm sorry, but I am only allowed to call the Parking office."

He walks back to the female who was sitting inside her car waiting to park in Visitor parking. After speaking to her, he walks back to the Visitor parking booth window. He tells me "Mr. Johnson" told her she could park in Visitor parking." So I tell him "There are only enough spots for what is posted on the calendar, & "Mr. Johnson" did not make parking arrangements for anyone going to see him or anyone going to his dept."

He walks back to the female who was waiting inside her car. After speaking to her, he walks back to the Vsitor parking booth window. He asks me "Is the garage full?" I tell him "I only have enough parking spots for what is posted on the calendar. I do not have any other spots for anyone else."

He walks back to the female who was sitting inside her car. He tells her what I said. She backs up, & she parks somewhere else.

Hey, that's just like when the customer has you call the parking office over and over and over...only this time it was via human instead of phone.

Campus cop had to tell a customer the day after this incident they could not park

Your reply made me think of an incident that happened the next day.

Visitor parking was reserved all day this past Wednesday for an event sponsored by the President's office.

According to the Parking office whenever Visitor Parking is reserved for an event sponsored by the President's office, anyone who is not here for their event cannot park in Visitor parking. That includes all students, all faculty/staff members, & every visitor no matter why you are here or where you are going.

Female customer drives up to the Visitor parking booth & tells me she is here for a meeting at the Natural Science dept. It was not possible for her or anyone going to that meeting to park in Visitor parking. The big white sign stating Visitor parking is closed for a special event was placed in front of the Visitor parking booth.

I told her that the garage was closed for an event & that I had no available spots. She told me she was here for the special event. So I look at the Outlook calendar printouts *the reservations are posted on the Outlook calendar*, & I tell her "I'm sorry, but it is not."

She looks pissed, & so she asks me if I can call the dept. head. I told her the dept. head has to call the Parking office because only they can give me permission for anyone else to park. She looks annoyed, & so she asks me if she can park somewhere else. I give her several options, & I tell her it is all pay parking. She asks me to raise the gate for her to exit. I do that, but instead of exiting, she parks next to the faculty/staff garage, which is adjacent to Visitor parking.

Since I am not allowed to approach anyone who does that, I stayed inside the Visitor parking booth. A couple of minutes later a campus cop arrived to "patrol around Visitor parking". The female customer who parked next to the faculty/staff garage was still there. So I told the campus cop what happened & the fact that she never told me that she was going to do that. The campus cop told me she would speak to the customer.

The campus cop walks up to the customer & asks her some questions. I saw the cop speaking on her cell phone. Then I saw the cop speaking to her, & then I saw the customer exiting the area.

The campus cop told me that she told the customer that Visitor parking was closed for an event & that the Natural Science dept. needs to make parking arrangements through Visitor parking for their guest(s) to park, & if they do not & Visitor parking is reserved, then their guest(s) have to find other parking.

I wonder if the customer thought if she told the campus cop what happened, that she would make an exception for her.

I don't believe it. The cop got her to go away.
Customers should always be served . . . to the nearest great white.
