  • I do not like extended waranties, Sam I Am.

This happened Sunday morning. About a month ago, my DS Lite started crapping out, so I put down a preorder for a DSi at the game store near my that I thought was pretty good. The next few paychecks I get, I put aside a little more money so that by Sunday morning, my DSi is all paid off.

It's about a 20 minute walk and I think I timed it fairly well. I got to the store at about 3 minutes before open.

I go in and pick up my preorder and the clerk asks me if I want an extended warranty.
    Me: No thank you.
Him: Are you sure once this leaves the store I can't offer it anymore.
    Me: I'm sure.
Him: Ok, but I think it's crazy to buy a brand new system and not get an extended warranty.
Me: I'm fine. I also ask for a brand new DS game to go with my purchase.
Him: I don't know why you don't want an extended warranty. If it was me, I would have gotten one.
    Me: ...

He rings up my total and I leave. I was in there longer than I should have. This almost makes me consider going somewhere else for my games. I used to be really happy with this place's service.

It may be more management's fault than the clerk's. I know I've read on here before about clerks being judged on how many extended warranties they manage to sell. Still, asking more than about twice is pretty sucky.

Has the clerk ever read Consumer Reports? They consider extended warranties to be mostly sucker's games, just like insurance at the blackjack table.

I know that it's management that wants the clerks to sell them, so I pretty much expect the question once. The clerk crossed the line when he brought his opinion into the pitch instead of telling me more benefits.

Besides, Nintendo's systems have a 12 month warranty and I got 90 days extra just for registering my serial number on Club Nintendo. I'd only be buying an extra 9 months. It's not worth it.

The only system I own where an extended warranty would've even been offered was my Wii, and Blockbuster didn't offer one when I bought the system. Not that I would've had the spare cash to get it anyway, and I generally don't worry about those warranties either unless the system is known for repeated failures (at which point the warranty would actually be useful).

My other two systems (PS2 and Dreamcast) were both bought used/refurbished, so no warranty for me.

Yeah, the clerk probably got jacked up by his manager for not selling enough extended warranties.

Those are free money just waiting to be claimed, you know.

Apparently, I have a way of glaring over the tops of my specs that causes people's voices to die in their throats mid-sentence. I could do it to customers in Kinko's, and I can do it to clerks and cashiers trying to hardsell me shit I neither want nor need.

              Kind of handy.

That dingleberry would have gotten The Glare.

Well, I'm not you. If I have any trouble I'll just send it to Nintendo. At least there, I won't have to put up with shit like this.

I think asking once is fine, asking more than that is annoying. Like you, I'm not blaming the employee, bu it still gets aggravating.

I actually stopped going to Media Play because of something like this. It wasn't extended warranties, but some kind of store card that would get you discounts, but you had to pay a monthly fee for it. One guy bugged me about it when I was looking at software, then another one started in on me when I was looking at movies. Then, as if that wasn't enough, the cashier did it when I went to pay.

I never set foot in there again until the place was going out of business. I figured I didn't have to worry about getting harrassed like that at that point.

I'm not saying that that was the reason the place went under, but it couldn't have helped.

Actually, it probably was a large contributing factor as to why it went under.

If you quit going there because of the harassment, you know you weren't the only one.

I really liked Media Play, it had a great variety. Shame the chain took the turn it did.

The constant pestering is one of the reasons why I left GameStop. I spent a fair amount of cash there too. Enough that most of the staff knew me by name--which may be a bit sad on me come to think of it. I didn't rant or rave about it. I just voted with my feet and went elsewhere one day.

I may do the same with my new gamestore as well, if they don't get their act together with preorders. I should not be able to find the game I pre-ordered on the shelf at Best Buy before I've been called on my pre-order. Anyone know a really good video game store within reasonable drive from south Dayton?

I'm assuming from what you told me in PM that it's GC you went to? They do get a bit of heat from on high if they don't meet a quota for warranties or MVP cards, so that probably contributed. Still to ask more than once is a bit odd, the guys there from my experience don't actually seem that pushy.

Note: Hero and I live near each other and by coincidence since we've never met, frequent the same game store.

I think someone posted on here that they are supposed to ask customers about extended warranties three times. I don't remember who, I don't remember the store, but I would be livid.

You sent me a PM mentioning 2 of the store employees who you hang out with. I've actually only met C once. She took my final deposit to get it paid off, but was not who I initially preordered with.

The pushy guy was none of the guys you mentioned. I'm not sure what his name is, but J is way cool. I should have let him take my preorder instead of pushy guy.
