I'm getting off my soapbox now... if I offended anyone, well, that's the way it is. We're all entitled to our opinions (when they conform to mine LOL)

Howler, I think it's also a regional thing. Some pit/pix mixes just come from bad breeding stock-- not just socially/psychologically but physical problems also. If the stock is good and they are trained properly I agree they make wonderful dogs. The stock that's available varies widely from state to state based on what the breeding programs look like in that area. It's certainly proven that some lines are better than others, just like with "show dog" breeding.

I think it also has to do with what TYPE of service they are trained to provide, as even with non-stigmatized dogs there are some that are more suitable for some tasks than others (i.e. collies for herding, german shepherds for police work, so forth). It's not at all meant as a slight to pits at all! Pits have things that they are better at and things they suck at (not chasing little squeaking animals being one that's commonly mentioned). It was just an observation from my point of view right here in Washington State. Pits aren't common as service animals here, that's all.

Ok - knock this crap off!

Stick to the OP being an Entlement Wh**e and knock off the debate about service animals.

Some of you who were contributing to the debate have been here longer than *I* have and damned well know this is unacceptable and crosses the line to Fratching.

I don't want to close this thread, but I will.

I hate it when people take their pets in and pretend they are service dogs. Someone brought in a dog about the size of a Yorkie and claimed it was a service dog. Then the next sentence she warned that the dog bites. Yeah, no. Pretty sure service dogs are trained not to bite.

I know in Wal-mart, they had a strict policy of only the greeter and managers were allowed to ask if it was a service dog. Then they were to drop it after someone stated that it was a service dog. I have a feeling that the policy was posted because of the lady I mentioned because she caused issues with other things.

I agree with the mod, service animals are an exception and NOT the topic in this thread. Also for the record, my GF's dogs love me. <3

Food stores have STRICT laws regarding animals inside, and heaven help the store that disregards a non-service animal inside if a health inspector is there; the SC obviously doesn't give a crap.

I'll tell you a story about an unleashed and unwelcome dog in the auto repair shop about 15 years ago.

This guy's large, beautiful red setter type dog was bounding around the shop unleashed when he came to pick up the car. His bare paws were getting oil, grease, gasoline residue, and various other carcinogens soaked into them.

I told him the dog shouldn't run around the shop.
              "She'll be okay."
              She's running in chemicals!
"We won't be here long, we're here to get the CAR."
Okay, well there are puddles of battery acid (not really) and antifreeze (really!) around, if she licks it, it might be fatal.
"It's okay, she's a good dog!" Total WTF moment for me!

This customer was a retired DOCTOR! He should know that drinking even a small amount of antifreeze means an unswift, miserable death as it crystallizes in the liver, and that poisonings in children, animals, and sometimes cheating spouses were not uncommon because of the sweet taste of ethylene glycol. This was years before bittering additives became mandatory.

I continued to try to reason with intransingence; yeah, I know. I spoke of the endangered California Condor chicks that had been hatched and painstakingly raised, and not long after being released in the wild, one drank antifreeze from an overheated van and died. How did the Good Doctor respond?

              "Well, that's those dumb things..."

Fine, I give up, caring more for your dog than you!

In conclusion, if a DOCTOR is this stubborn about the matter, what are the chances of reasoning with a screaming lout about dogs indoors?

I recall getting a call at the mall I used to work at of someone complaining of a dog in the mall. I saw it was a service dog; it had a vest, handle, etc. The person complaining SWORE it couldn't be a 'blind eye dog' because it wasn't a german shepherd or golden retriever. I had to explain how not all dogs are for the blind, and that service dogs can be a wide variety of breeds. The dog in question looked to be a boxer. Sheesh.

From the woman in the story's reaction, I'm guessing the dog was a pet. But, if it truly was a service dog, I'm wondering why she took it away from her daughter to go shopping

That woman sounds nuts, and her dog shouldn't be there without service dog ID. Simple as that.

I saw a woman carrying a dog into my work building once and didn't even register it as wrong until the guard said something. Suddenly, I thought, "Oh yeah, she's not supposed to have a dog in here...LOL." It was little and being carried. Of course, we had an incident where we found a kitten in one of the boss's tire wells and brought it in. I think the guard looked the other way, as it was clearly dirty and hungry and who knows what.

I may just have to start a new thread in Fratching to address the service dog issues; please join me!

However, this dog was NOT a service dog, because the bitch (the woman not the dog) would have calmly said so when confronted by the OP. That's all you have to do, say, "My dog is a service dog." End of discussion. Can't ask the owner any questions or question the right of the dog to be there. That's it.

So the dog was not a service dog and the woman was in fact every bit of a SC and EW for treating the OP the way she did.

Someone mentioned she may have been confronted by someone else, and I think this likely given her defensive reaction.

The really messed up part is, if this EW had realized all she had to do was say, "service dog," and that it couldn't be questioned, she'd have just said that and smirked knowing the OP couldn't do anything.

So she really is DUMB and IGNORANT as well as an EW. Three things unlikely to change.

This twit was just an entitled EW. It doesn't even take a room temperature IQ to know that you don't haul a big dog of any breed into a grocery store. It's the dog I feel sorry for. Sooner or later she will probably get the poor thing in trouble just because of her stupidity and people's prejudices against pit bulls. Since the dog is only mentioned as having been there it sounds as if the dog was no trouble and was probably embarrassed that the human on the other end of the leash was acting poorly. Bad human. Bad!

Joanne Fabric here in town allows an odd lady in with her little "therapy dog" who sits in the cart and is a pleasant little fellow. Maybe in some way he is her therapy dog. I know it always makes me smile to see him riding along like a king in his carriage.

I'm scared of dogs as it is, but if this SC is bringing in a pit bull, I would be scared shitless and would not be able to do my job until the dog leaves.

I personally find more of a problem with the EW using the "brain tumour daughter" line... Absolutely disgusting; if it's true, then why use it as an excuse to get icecream (and break the rules) , and - as is most likely the case - if it's NOT true, then...

I will admit to having brought a dog into a shop before. *ducks flying objects* It was a local shop, and the owners knew me and my family. The dog, the family dog who we'd recently aquired, had severe abandonment issues from her old owners having left her, so I knew that if I left her outside the shop, she'd just howl and be constantly trying to escape. At the time, I was carefully training her out of this; ie, leaving her alone for short periods of time, but the shop was busy so I wouldn't be able to do this. I was getting milk, which was a necessity back in our house.

I asked the woman in the shop if I could take the dog in, or if she could bring the milk out to me and I'd give her the money. She said I could bring the dog in as long as she was well behaved. I brought the dog in on her lead and she stayed close to me the whole time. I bought the milk and left.

Of course, I understand that this was a different situation; just wanted to drop in the fact that there can be another reason to bring a dog in than the obvious. But the SC completely lost all sympathy and reason to understand when she swore at the OP. I just feel sorry for her dog.
