  • There's these things called 'security cameras' ...

I walked in to the store for my shift yesterday to see a couple of coworkers and a guy who I recognized as a security guard picking over an overloaded shopping buggy. Turns out it had been in the hands of a couple who believed that being a 'customer' means not having to pay for your stuff.

The buggy was piled high. Apparently they decided to try just walking out with it. Thankfully the eagle-eyed security guy was on the lookout.

No, they didn't get caught; they apparently took one look at him approaching with a suitably grim expression, abandoned their loot, and took off running.

Were they identified? If so, keep us posted.
Crud, I need to buy some more popcorn.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

I don't know if they were, but I strongly suspect my company is one of those that doesn't bother to prosecute unless it's an armed robbery or something. Will ask today.

I totally understand about the popcorn, LOL.

The day after the initial incident we had ANOTHER one.

This time it was a couple trying to scam the self-checkouts ... scanning maybe 1/3 or 1/4 of what they actually had. As with the initial theft attempt, this was a couple of hundred dollars' worth of stuff.

I wasn't in yet when this all went down (why do I miss all the fun??) but apparently the cops were called while they were still at the self-checkouts. Hubby got all discombobulated, screaming that they were being mean to his wife (or something like that), and I think they were escorted out, minus their ill-gotten goods.

And no, we don't apparently prosecute. I asked what would happen then? "Oh, they'll be banned from the store and all nearby stores."

Well, I hope they gave their photos to the security guys, because as far as I know, none of the cashiers have seen them.

If the other stores do not have photos they will be scam attempts at them too by the same people.

Not helped by the fact everyone's wearing masks these days...

Back when I worked for the food stamp office, people would be banned and then come back a few days later because they knew there were no cameras and nobody working up front today would have witnessed the confrontations. Hurray for employee security.
