Such a tragic loss. Her Grace must be so distraught.

Only 2 months before his centennial birthday, too. They were together for more than 74 73 years. That's longer than the average lifespan in many parts of the world.

I wonder if this will prompt her majesty to retire.

Apparently she wanted to marry him since she met him in 1939 and her father the King wanted to be cautious because he didn't just want her marrying the first bloke she fell in love with, especially since she was only 13 at the time. But I think he'll agree she knew what she was doing- to be married for 73 years must have worked out pretty well somehow.

He's certainly one of the more interesting characters in the Royal Family-the family were exiled after the Turkish defeat of Greece in 1922 and as a toddler he accompanied them on the boat carried in an orange-box and his parents pretty much abandoned him as a youngster-his father was an inveterate gambler who floated around from Monte Carlo to the South of France and his mother who was stone deaf become a nun and eventually developed schizophrenia and was sent to an asylum. In the war, he saved many of his crew after their ship was damaged by setting smoke bombs onto lifeboats and floating them out to sea. Whilst the enemy aimed for them, the crew were able to wait in the ship for help.

As for retiring, pretty much the only option she'd consider is a regency with her reigning in name whilst Charles actually conducted state business.Abdication is not popular as she believes it was the effects of the last one that contributed towards her father's early death.

Which is why the Meghan split is such a big thing- that she remembers all too well what happened the last time an American socialite tried to come into the Royal Family and make her spouse choose between his partner and his royal duties.
