  • Mumbled apologies to the (probable) telemarketer

I almost never answer my phone; I let the answering service pick up.

Tonight I let the service pick up, only to find that the message was from somebody I'd actually been hoping to hear from.

So I called back. Left a message.

Some time later the phone rang again, and this time I picked it up, thinking it was the above person.

    Me: "Hello?"

*silence except for chatting in the background*

Oh crap. It's a telemarketer. Or a scammer. I should have hung up right then and there but instead I repeated: "HELLO?"

    Caller: "Hi, is *Pixelated* there?"

Me: "No, she's not here right now."

    *click*

Yeah, I could've handled that better, I think. If it WAS a telemarketer, they're only doing a job, and if they call back, I'll repeat that I'm not here ATM but "Can I take a message?" and see where that goes. I was just seriously annoyed that it wasn't the person I had been waiting to hear from.

And that, folks, is why I usually don't answer the phone. It gives too many people an introduction to my Inner Surly Self.
