I was on cash register, we were busy off and on. There was a lull of a couple of minutes, then two older women got in line, busy talking to each other. Another woman, a youngish petite lady was in line behind them, looking rather intimidated.
I called for the next customer, which was the first of the two women. They were still busy chatting to each other, so I thought they didn't hear me. I called again, a little louder. The first woman takes umbrage at this, angrily scolding me for interrupting and saying she wasn't ready.
ME: Then I can take the next person after you if she's ready.
SC: There's no one else in line!
I saw the younger woman slinking out of line. A different woman came into line and the two older women let her go ahead, so she came to my register.
DW: Those women are now talking crap about you.
ME: I'm not surprised.
DW: Yeah, people just don't realize what it's like to work in retail.
ME: You can't, unless you actually have.
Her item rang up on sale, she was quite happy, we finished the sale and she left.
The first older woman came up to my register.
SC:
There was no need to be so nasty! We were having a conversation and we weren't ready!
ME: Ma'am, there was another person behind you.
SC:
There was nobody behind us!!!
Whatever. I rung her up, rang up her coupon, we finished the sale, I said See You Next Time. She was all so cheerful as she left. I rang up the second older woman with no problem.
Later, I told my manager to expect a complaint about me, and told her about the two women. She said, "Oh yeah, I saw them earlier, don't worry about it." So hopefully I shouldn't get in trouble.
Thing is, if you're not ready to be rung up, don't get in line! It's that freaking simple! If you get in line, the cashier is going to expect you to go to her register and complete the transaction, as are the people who get in line behind you.
I hope this doesn't come off as a FTSTS, but people do need to realize that there are other people in the world besides them.
