  • Escape Attempt No. 4

Here we go again. After three doomed attempts at escaping hotel hell here, I am trying once more. This time, I'm letting someone else do the work of looking for work for me. I'm still checking the paper every day, along with the weekly independent, and monster.com, as well as an enormous wad o' classified ads that comes out every week and includes upwards of 200 job listings in every issue. Nothing is jumping out at me, still. All I see are jobs I am not qualified for or jobs I don't want to do because they're as bad or worse than the one I have.

So, I took the advice of a friend and signed up at a staffing service. She found work through them, although it did take a month, and now she works at a plastics factory that seems interested in hiring her on permanently. I went in for my interview with them, filled out all the paperwork, took the clerical tests -- and I learned that I type 85 words a minute -- and explained my needs. Full time. Benefits. Don't waste my time for anything less than $10/hour.

Speaking of, whenever anyone at the staffing service found out what I make per hour and that I have worked here for five years, they were without exception, horrified. One of the ladies there exclaimed, "You could make more than that at McDonald's!" Then she reddened and said, "Not that I'm saying you should go work at McDonald's, of course."

So here we are. It took my friend a month of calling three times a week to find a job. They require you call them at least once a week to indicate you're still looking. I went in on Tuesday, and I'm planning to call this coming Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the reason why I need to leave was driven home today. As if it isn't driven home every day. We hired a new girl who was so frustrated and overwhelmed by the time I got in today that she said she wouldn't be coming back and was near tears. She doesn't want to come back because what the boss finds acceptable changes by the hour. If you call too much she gets angry. If you don't call her enough with your questions she gets angry. We desk clerks do everything from front desk to housekeeping to maintenance here. The last thing the new girl did before she left was go clean a room, in fact, because the guest used it for a quick fuck and then left. If the boss finds out a guest has left early, she will make you clean it so she can sell it again. Refuse and she will badger and hector you until you give in, or else threaten to come in and do it herself. If she loses that extra $70 or extra $140 on a room, she will make your life miserable. What it boils down to is that the boss is the one and only person who can run this place the way she wants it to be run, wringing every penny that she can get out of every last guest. When people have walked out because the rate (I want $x and no lower!) was too high for them, she has chased them down in the parking lot to lower the rate and get them to stay. It makes us look like fools. None of the rest of us can fixate so completely on money as she can, and if she gets angry enough about it, she will let you know, threaten to fire you and talk about how she wants a new staff.

Basically, she's the cheapest and greediest person I have ever known and only certain personalities can get along with her. Somehow, I ended up being one of those, but I have had enough. I had enough back in November. So, here's hoping and praying to God that this escape attempt will finally, finally, finally be the one that gets me out.

Bonus gripe: A minute ago my boss called and did one of the things that she does that I despise. In lieu of a greeting, she asks, "Busy?" Sometimes, instead she asks, "Sold out?" There is no greeting, as whether you are busy or sold out and thus making money for her is all she cares about.

Good luck in your search! I'm ducking out of work in an hour to get ready for my own job interview later this afternoon. And I really want it!
