  • "I've been waiting in line for 25 minutes!!1!!!!1!11!1!!!elevnty!! (long and ranty)

    More like 15 sir.

Dear Lord I'm so pissed right now! Never before had I felt the urge to punch a customer until tonight!

So lets paint the picture shall we? It's after 9:15pm. SCO and one register are all that's open. 2 sackers (one of which was staying over about 30 minutes and I'm most grateful for that). I'm behind on my nightly accounting tasks. My manager is behind on his crap and has the produce guy staying over as well to help him. And my line at the register is starting to get a little long. Now the only backup I have are the people helping my manager and are unavailable and have been all day. (we were THAT behind) So calling backup was out of the question. I'm behind on my stuff and probably won't leave on my scheduled time once again.

So I head off from the cash office to get the till from the Deli register when my cashier asks me if we can get another line open (the line is now down the aisle and one customer is wanting another lane open). I tell I have no one else and simply moved on to what I was doing. Came back got the tills in the safe grabbed some keys and picked up my coupons. I come back out only to hear a customer (the one wanting his other lane open) yelling at my employees at the register. (Oh great) And I have to get the till in the register right behind him (even better), meaning he's probably going to confront me *deep breath*. Here goes nothin.

    AG: Angry Guy
Me: Acting supervisor already stressed out.

AG: Excuse me!! Are you the manager on duty or something?!
Me: No sir I'm just a supervisor.
AG: A supervisor. I want to know why you didn't get someone to open another lane earlier! (He starts raising his voice and it's already pretty high. Too high to assume he has self control with his anger)
Me: I didn't have anyone sir.
AG: Well couldn't you open up?!?!
Me: No sir I'm really behind right now and I really need to ge this stuff done.
AG: (gives that look like 'of course') So you're saying that your stuff is more important. When I'm sitting in line for 25 MINUTES back in the candy aisle having to wait on all these foodstamps and such!
Me: (Starting to get pissed off and look it too) Sorry sir but I have to get this stuff done before I leave. Corporate only gives me so many people, there was nothing I could have done.
AG: WELL I'M SORRY THAT YOU WANT TO GO HOME ON TIME (yes he's yelling loud enough to be heard throught the front of the store) BUT MAYBE YOU KNOW HOW I FEEL. I WAS IN LINE FOR TWENTY-FIVE MINUTES!! HOW WOULD YOU LIKE IT IF YOU LOST 25 MINUTES OF YOUR DAY!!
Me: (so pissed off at this point I can't speak or risk saying something I'd regret later)

This continues on for a while, as he rant and raves about being in line for 25 minutes yadda yadda yadda.

AG: I'VE BEEN HALLING LUMBER ALL DAY AND YOUR OUT HERE GETTING COUPONS!

Oh no he didn't! He did not just say that!

Me: WELL I'M SORRY SIR BUT CORPORATE ONLY GIVES US SO MANY HOURS!
AG: I DON'T CARE ABOUT HOURS I JUST WANT TO BE CHECKED OUT!!!ELEVENTY!!!

Well aren't we the smart one. Um hours=people less hours=less people meaning I have less people to take care of you. You poor poor thing.

At this point I'm done talking to him he finishes his transaction and I start getting the other register ready to take to the safe. Making it very known by my actions that I'm really pissed off right now.

AG: I take it I ticked you off and that's why you're acting that way?!
Me: Yes sir because you're being very rude. (I said that as calmly as I could, but I felt like I was going to start strangling him any moment now.)
    AG: I'm being rude!

Oh boy here we go! and so continues the rant I just give him the silent treatment because if I say anything I'm just gonna piss him off even more. Basically "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all". Finally he head for the door and finishes with...

AG: You know y'all may be the only store in town (huh?) but you're not the only one around!! (storms off)

Ok. Um there's Wal Mart, HEB, and Stantons just down the road. I think there are other grocery stores. And the one's "around" are 15 minute drives at least. Good luck with that sir.

Oh man he was lucky it wasn't someone else, because most other guys around here (like the sacker that was right there) would have punched him in the face long ago. The others said I handeled that pretty well adn one hugged me. They knew I was pissed are tried to comfort me. I told them I'll be ok. I have a nice little forum I can vent at tonight! Thank God for CS.

I mean seriously? He really said "I've been halling lumber all day and you're getting coupons!" like he was better than us somehow. I know the cashier felt like he was calling us lower class at that point. God I hate people that think that what they're doing that day somehow transends above our lives. Boy he felt highly of himself. Damn EW! I told my manager later (who told me that if I was behin let the lines get long. We have stuff to do! God I love him) and he just laughed at the story. At least now if any comlaints come through he and the others can back me up. Oh man, and he was a regular too. It wasn't the first time he's gotten mad about the line (you'd think he would have caught on by now...ah SCs gotta love 'em). I know next time I'm refusing service to him. I don't appreciate me and my fellow co-workers being treated like they're lower class citizens and don't deserve the same respect as he does because obviously lifting lumber is totally more respectful then some stupid grocery store supervisor. Also the yelling made him lose even more points in my book. As far as I'm concerned he can wait in line with the slowest cashier from now on. Or I can simply refuse service period. I could care less what the big wigs would say. You don't talk to my employees like that.

Wow I got through that with no explitives and only two smilies? Yeah I'm definately pissed. I'm so pissed I can't even stop from typing to put in a smilie. And no explitives, for me that's pretty pissed. I'm so glad I have a place to rant about this sort of thing.

See if he tried that at the place I worked he would have been gone. I would have just came out and told him he could go someplace else.

The owner and his dad said if someone is screaming or cussing at us, we are to tell them to get out. If they refuse to leave we are to call the police and let them handle the idiot.

Of course they can come back in the next day if they are going to be civil. Only way we can ban someone for good is if they are caught stealing. But sure does feel good to be able to tell them to hit the road or the police will be called.

Its funny as heck when they tell me I can't make them leave and I ask if they want to bet as I am calling the police. Then to have an officer show up and tell them to leave because I said so really makes me feel good. Bad part is 9 out of 10 times the police show after the jerk has left.

You definitely handled yourself well, it would've took me much less time to snap and say some incredibly bad stuff after all that yelling from the SC. You and your manager rock!

        Awwww

I've been hauling textbooks all week, I can drop the pallets on his head, if you'd like...but that would violate CS rules...damn. It's a nice image, at least.

You have far more self restraint than I would have. After about the second time he started in yelling, if it were me, I would've gotten downright snarky on him, and it wouldn't have been pretty. Probably amusing to bystanders, but not at all pretty.

I've been waiting for an opportunity to post this pic... I think it very much fits:

Have a hug too *hugs* I would've started bawling if he acted like that to me.

I've witnessed something like that---sadly the manager caved and opened up a register to check him out. I hate people like that--and the ones who cave. He was yelling up quite a storm though. You did very well though--I probably would have hit him. Or called him a .

That guy is a total abortion. I mean, what a jerk. And I like how he actually tries to "take you to task" for wanting to go home on time. As though that were something "childish" to want.

                Asshat.

Wow, is this his first time EVER shopping at a grocery store? Twenty-five minutes (riiiiight) is nothing to cry about ...

And ... apparently he's never been in customer service ... and I'll bet his "hauling lumber" was probably done with heavy machinery.....

                    I think there's a song about him:

                    I'm a lumberjack and I'm OK
I sleep all night and I work all day.

I cut down trees, I act a douche
                    I go to the lavatory.
On Wednesdays I go shopping and wait in line

                    All together now:
He cuts down trees, he acts a douche
                    He goes to the lavatory.
On Wednesdays he goes shopping and waits in line

                      Nice one, Cinema Guy.

You did handle it well. If it had been my boss Bossman!K at the pool store, he'd have socked the guy into the pavement. No one talks to his employees that way. Kudos to you for keeping your patience as well as you did.

Now about the whole hauling lumber thing. Remember this is out in the Houston area were we've been recovering from Ike for quite some time now. So it could just mean he's been repairing his fence or something. Still you would think he would realize that outside of "getting coupons" I too had been home cleaning up down trees and fences so I've been "hauling lumber" for 2 weeks now. I have 600 feet of fence to replace kind sir, you're not the only one doing hard work around these parts.

                        To sum it up:

When I worked at the movie theater, people would start forming lines at the empty registers. I mean, come on! No one is there to serve you! But that didn't stop morons from demanding service at a CLOSED register.

^haha about that one, in one corner of our grocery store we have a little food area, and there are two registers, one where you can get coffee which is by the bagels, and the other is about 50 feet away and sells pizza and chicken and stuff like that.

When people are on break they mainly go over to the seating area behind this food area and I just love watching people do that. Often only one of the registers is open. I will often see people stand and look annoyed at a register with no one around at all (I keep my distance otherwise they'll probably bug me about it even though I'm on break). But eventually they make their way over to the open one, hopefully.

The guy sounds like a real CORN hauler, to me!
