two things, first, i HATE HATE HATE fake antivirus programs. i wish to bring down the firey wrath of all the angry gods upon the writers of this crap. got a new one running around my work network. antivirus1. most likely a variant of av360 et al. second, is more a curiosity than anything, does anyone know of a way to keep the vundo bug from getting on a pc, moms paid av failed to keep it off and i had to break out malwarebytes and hijackthis to kill it. any advice is welcome

I have a problem with something that's blocking all my cleaners. I can run malwarebytes definition updater, but can't install malwarebytes. I tried installing it ON my memory key, but it still won't run.

Haven't found any way around it yet except a reformat... which I can't do on student computers.

I HAVE had some luck with trend micro's housecall free scan. Just as a suggestion.

Well, seeing as they are most likely to come in by someone seeing the:

"YOUR COMPUTER IS INFECTED!!!!!!!!!!! DOWNLOAD <virus disguised as AV program> NOW TO SAVE YOUR COMPUTER!!!!!!!!!"

And go "OMG! I NEED THIS PROGRAM OR I'M GOING TO LOSE EVERYTHING!!!!" and then download and run it, might I suggest electro-shock therapy? <goes to look for souped up cattle prod>

(sorry about the grammar of the pop up, I know the pop ups aren't this well written)

fortunately my mother is smarter than most and wont download anything she doesn't trust. whats odd is that the vundo infection came in while she was watching a dr who episode online. she had some issues watching greys anatomy and had to switch from ff to ie. i think that's where the fun began......

I'm not seeing a live CD for Kapersky. Where did you find it, since it is not on their website? I'd love to add this to my toolset.

here used it to fix a comp for a friend not too long ago,

[edit] looking at it now i think it was created by someone else using the rescue disk function of kaspersky's av client....hmmm

That's kind of what I figured it would be. Not a bad idea to keep it around, so long as your sure it works.

                Thanks.

Easy way around this for most issues is to rename the Malwarebytes .exe to mb.exe or something else. Many that can block the install just look for the original name of the .exe. If it still denies the install (low chance, but a couple are smart enough not to be fooled), find the folder with the fake anti-virus program in C:\Program Files and delete it. Then try to start the install again.

Hey, I finally tried to use the LiveCD that Steele linked, and all I got was a message that the Operating system couldn't be found, or maybe missing operating system.

                    What did I do wrong?

did you copy the file from your comp directly to the cd or did you run the iso conversion so that the image wrote the proper files? i ask because vista screwed up a few live cds that i tried to make and finaly i used the toshiba disk utility that came with my laptop.

I used the "burn an image" option. You think I just need to try to burn it again?

its possible, i found that some of the comps i worked on with this i had to set the cdrom as the primary boot disk. couple of them took it without messing with it. only other thing i can think of is maybe they changed the iso and broke it....

I'm thinking it was Roxio. I'm tossing Nero on my XP box now.

(My poor Vista box doesn't have a burner... yet.)
