  • Wife got pulled over in contruction zone

About a month ago my wife's on a lunch break on a state highway with construction. They're widening it to a 4-lane highway from 2. State trooper clocks her doing 60 where it drops down to 40!

Trooper pulls her over, asks her in a pretty stern voice if she knows why he pulled her over. She spills her guts and tells him. He also tells her that he notices she's not wearing a seatbelt either (Indiana has that stupid "Primary Seatbelt Law" like most other states now do). Wanna know what he does????

    He gives her a WARNING!!!!!

He prints out a warning ticket for her. He says it won't let him print one out for going 10 over, so he'll just document as doing a 50 in a 40. Holy shit did we get lucky. I hear that a fine in a construction zone can easily costs hundreds! He gives it to her and just tells her to try to slow down and to put her belt on.

Now you know that if it was me I would have had the book thrown at me since ALL scruffy-looking white guys wearing scruffy clothes (BTW Which I like to wear because they're comfortable) are obviously "criminals" that are up to no good.

Aye. Depending on the state, fines in construction zones typically double or triple. Some states make a distinction "if workers are present". The cheapest infraction here starts at $125 even before the mods...>_>

Woah! She was definetely lucky on that one!

Nobody seems to understand the construction zone law, that you have to go the posted speed even when no work is being done. I always end-up with a dozen asshats lined-up, tailgating me!

Wow, yeah, she did get lucky.

Although I can't see what having a primary seat belt law has to do with anything when she was pulled over for speeding. That just means that you can be pulled over for not being belted, as opposed to only being ticketed for not being belted if you're pulled over for something else, first.

I can see getting caught going too fast when you first hit a construction zone, but I have yet to hear anything close to a reasonable argument for not wearing a seat belt.

          Lucky! Here, it's a minimum of $375.

Looking at this site in Indiana it's $300....

The part that got my attention the most was this....

"If you drive 46 mph in a highway work zone and perform any aggressive action on a driver in front of you, such as flashing your headlights, and you get caught, you get a $5,000 fine that probably comes with its own Howitzer sound effects"

Yes, my wife WAS lucky. Especially since we share the same checking account, I'm also breathing a sigh of relief.

This reminds me of one wonderful time when the cops here (or it may have been in neighboring Kenner, same diff) gave the most wonderful pwning to some pompous City Councilman or the like...

Said lawmaker decided, one day, that he felt that the Police were not "writing enough tickets" consistently or something like that. Thus, he got a Bill pushed thru the Council which imposed a mandatory quota (minimum # of tickets per shift) upon them; failure to make quote was apparently to be enforced by some sort of financial disincentive, like fewer shifts, et al. Given that that the Council (in this case) really had no business interfering here, the cops were, understandably, a bit miffed. It should be noted that the Council is ALLOWED to do this sort of thing, but the PD itself is supposed to keep tabs on tickets/income, and it was doing so. Also, the quota was LESS than what any competent cop would normally write in any given day, thus making it totally pointless.

The traffic cops reacted in the only way they could: Each one wrote *exactly* the number of tickets needed each shift to make quota, then they either stowed their ticketbooks for the rest of the shift, or went off to chill under a shade tree until Dispatch needed them for a call or they needed to run a patrol

The quota was quietly done away with a short time later.

Not that I want to start an argument, but that law is a very good idea. Seatbelts save lives, and more importantly lots of tax dollars when the powers that be have to clean the driver's entrails off of the tarmac with a pressure washer.

                Sorry. As you were...

                  dayum she was lucky

                  in NY it's pretty strict.

Double fines for speeding in a construction zone & revocation of a license for 2 offenses
