  • No Cash, No Room.

Seriously, not paying for something ANYWHERE means you won't get it, yes? Hotels are no different. My hotel has a policy in place that ANY cash paying guest (Meaning cash for the room rate) has to also fork over a 50 dollar deposit, they can get back in the morning.

I gave them two forms, one is the room folio (Name, car information, signature. Simple transactions for simple people.) The other, is the deposit form. I have them READ it, then sign it. Or least, that's what I tell them to do.

There are only a few ways you will not get your deposit back from us:
    1. Damage to hotel property.
    2. Disturbances resulting in me calling the cops, and you getting the hell out!
    3. Evidence of any illegal activity, INCLUDING drugs / Prostitution / Child Endangerment etc.
    4. Smoking in a designated non-smoking room.

I sign it, the guest signs it, I photocopy the id, tell them to bring the form and ID down, and someone will check the room for them AFTER 9 am the morning they check out.

At the bottom of said sheet, in bold: WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU DO NOT READ THIS AND BREAK THE RULES. APPROPRIATE ACTION WILL BE TAKEN!

    K, there's the backstory.

Last month, I checked in a guest. Really nice gentleman, I gave him the form, took the deposit and he went on his merry little way.
The next morning, I had to stay a bit late due to a co-workers car not functioning, so I was who checked his room so I could give him the deposit and let him go on his way.

I can't lie folks. Went into the room and not only SMELLED the pot, I saw it on the desk in the ashtray. Took a clean ice back (they're clear), dumped the seeds into it, tied the bag shut and carried it down to the desk. I calmly took the folio, his deposit slip AND money along with the bag, stuck it on my managers desk and then turned to deal with him.

He looked at me, noticed I wasn't holding his deposit envelope and asked why I wasn't giving him his money back. As calmly and politely as I could explain, I told him that due to finding the pot seeds in the ashtray of his room, I couldn't give him the deposit back. Read how well that went over.

    M: Me
    G: Guest

G: You planted the pot there and I don't remember anything in the room stating I couldn't smoke it.
M: Sir, it's an illegal substance and it was very clearly printed on the sheet you signed, when you gave me the cash deposit last night.
    G: I didn't sign it.
M: *sighs, picks up copies I keep for the desk* Sir, these are your signatures. Yes?
    G: *nods* But I didn't smoke it.
M: I did tell you, that you were responsible for the room, it's your name on it. While you may not have smoked it, you paid for the room. I have to hold you accountable.
G: The girl who checked me in last night didn't explain the paper to me.
M: Sir, I was who checked you in, and I DID tell you to read it.
G: I thought it was optional!

Ladies and Gentleman, if you're given a sheet for ANY reason, and you SIGN it without reading, that makes you an SC too!

What makes it a double-bonus is that he's practically asking you to call the cops. What the hell is wrong with people.

And this is one more reason I liked night audit, but never wanted to stay past 7am.

      LOL
I did actually HAVE to call the cops to have him taken out of my lobby (Name calling + little kids = Pissed off parents..)

I love the Dispatcher for non-emergency: "Thanks for calling APD, how can we help you?" "This is SHW at *hotel* I have a RGOP (Rude Guest on Property.) Dispatcher: "standing by you?" "Yep.. "

We get that all the time. "But it wasn't me! It was my friend/spouse/child/coworker/stranger I met at the pub!" Perhaps, but you're name's on the registration, you signed the paper, so you're the one responsible.

My motel doesn't require deposits. I often wish we did.

It's wonderful. Although, I think I might have to start making little paper oscars for the "Cash Paying Dramatic Scenes".

You MENTION the cash policy and you can see the gears going. Or you get the dededes that tell you to "Waive the fee." Yeah.. no.

You planted the marijuana evidence when you did the inspection, but he still smoked it? He's blaming you and admitting fault in the same sentence. And traveling through time, apparently.

It's like he had a few ideas he was going to use if you refused to return his deposit, but because he's an idiot, he tried them all at the same time. That whole conversation between the two of you was painfully stupid, but his first line is pure failure.

Though he's probably right stating that there is no "Do Not" list in each room that individually lists any and all prohibited activities... he's still an idiot.

              It would have been priceless if he'd said;

"It wasn't my pot! I swear!"

"It belonged to the two hookers that I had in there!"

Wow, what an idiot. But, I'm wondering, what would happen if you had someone come in with a medical card for marijuana and presented it to you to prove they could legally smoke it and was in a designated smoking room, would you still keep the deposit? Just wondering how that situation would pan out.
Just because they serve you, doesn't mean they like you. And just because they smile and act polite doesn't mean they aren't planning to destroy you.

                  That's a definite "Maybe"...

Per state law, medical marijuana is legal in certain states, so they're not in violation of state law when they smoke it. This being the case, I don't see any reason they shouldn't get their deposit back, assuming they didn't violate other laws or cause damage to the property (or smoke it in a non-smoking area).

That having been said, cannabis is still a controlled substance in schedule I, therefore illegal to possess under federal law, although I haven't heard of any prosecutions for this recently. I suppose it boils down to a judgment call on the part of the property manager; if the guest is well behaved, then no reason to be a hard-ass; on the other hand if he's a fountain of suck, the manager could conceivably use that as a basis to penalize him. (Although there's likely to be other reasons as well in such a case.)

(My personal opinion of medical MJ, whether pro or con, is irrelevant; fratching is ---> thataway...)

No, there's not a "DO Not" list in each room, BUT he did have his own copy of the agreement which he signed, that DID have the rules on them. Really, not my fault he didn't read them. Don't sign anything you don't read moron..

I probably wouldn't be able to. Not sure even medical marijauna is legal, and I highly doubt my co-workers would photocopy the stupid card anyway.. but my Manager would be able to give it back.

Had that been true, he would have been up front about it when checking in. And, he wouldn't have pulled all of the BS that he did once confronted with the evidence.

                        LMAO.

Most commonly used excuses at a hotel:
-- I paid for my room, I can do what I want.
                        -- I didn't see it.
                        -- You didn't say that
                        -- I didn't hear it.
-- It wasn't me (what are you, 5?)
                        -- You planted it.
                        -- You stole it.

Just a note that any further discussion of that matter should be taken to fratching, where ta2ooed1 was wise enough to start a thread on this very thing, rather than continuing it here.

Didn't mean to start a whole deal with it, didn't know if your state allowed it or not. I know our state hasn't yet so was just wondering.

I couldn't agree more with your statement. I READ EVERYTHING I sign, slowly and carefully. Even simple things need to be read. Haha, especially employment stuff.
I'm sorry reading is not a new concept it has been widely taught in our nation for at least the past 100 years. Please, learn to do it CORRECTLY before you become contagious.
