  • God, just shut up!

Just had this happen, while sitting in my first class of the day. We're discussing the Underworld in our lovely mythology class and that generic "I think I'm cool so I'm going to make sarcastic remarks about everything the professor says" started opening his flap-hole again. This time to mock the field of psychology. I am majoring in psych, so this kind of did not sit well with me. He pretty much compared psychology to meteorology, saying both are stupid and the such. He even went as far to say that neither of them are truly needed in the world. So, his basic explaination is that we should just shoot and kill all "crazy" people. This is also coming from a guy who, in my history class, everything turns into conspiracy theories and the such. He's majoring in journalism, and no bull, to write for Sports Illustrated magazine. Mainly so he can get the first copy of the Swimsuit Edition. He has actually stated this. Sounds like a great career path, have fun with that.
I will see you in my office in about 50 years, with the best psychological care known to man to help you with your alzhiemer's.........Oh wait, you think psychology is stupid, that's right. Alright, lemme get my shotgun and we'll take care of the pesky thing you call life and everything will be right with world. Fuck you dude.
Just because they serve you, doesn't mean they like you. And just because they smile and act polite doesn't mean they aren't planning to destroy you.

I'll help you man that shotgun. I'm majoring in psychology, too. He sounds like an idiot.

Wow, there's a career plan! All with the goal of getting the first copy of a magazine featuring women in skimpy swimsuits. Mama's going to be proud enough to cry.

Well, I'm sure tears will be a part of her reaction to this plan, anyway.

I have my doubts about meteorology sometimes-- mostly just when Bob F'ing Ryan is on TV, since I can't stand the smug douche-- but I wouldn't mock it.

But you interrupt a class on mythology, I'll kick your ass. I'm a mythology buff.

I'd say his skill set, such as it is, is more suited to a job with ESPN. There, he can gawk at Erin Andrews and Rachel Nichols all day.

If he has that much against meteorologists, I'm guessing he doesn't live in a hurricane zone. Perhaps he should move to the coast one year and see if he's checking the forecast.

My wx-geek brethren thank you for that (though I have been outta school for a while now and cannot forecast my way out of a paper bag)

Let the guy write for SI, and then we can tear part his articles.

He'll never write for SI. Even they have standards.

What's wrong with meteorology anyway? It seems that you have to know quite a bit to do it....some fluid dynamic stuff, some geology, geography and probably some other stuff that I'm completely forgetting.

Nothing wrong with it. The douchebag is just too stupid to actually know what meteorology actually entails and is likely just parroting something someone else said because he thought it would make him sound cool.

so wait let me get this straight:

He's going to school, majoring in journalism (which involves research and being able to present your position in a logical-ish manner with evidence) and paying for all this just to get a free magazine once a year with women in skimpy swimsuits?

Wouldn't it be cheaper to A) buy the damned magazine once a year or B) download pin-ups off the internet? Seriously B) is free and there's more out there. And its fresh and new year round! To pay for college just to get one magazine a year from a company that'll hire him some time around the heat death of the universe...

That's a few grand for a magazine each year. The math alone proves his idioticness.

(For the record I'm a history major with a minor in folklore and mythology. Find a use for my degree outside of teaching I dare ya)

shankyknitter, I actually can think of careers outside of teaching with that education. You could get a job in film as an advisor (Steven Spielberg decides he wants to make a movie about ancient Greece, but he knows nothing about ancient Greece, who do you think he goes to... okay, terrible example, Spielberg would never do ancient Greece you still get the idea). You could be a tour guide (having someone who can explain the historical significance of a location comes in quite handy). Could always write your own fiction (historic fiction is a decent selling genre if I understand correctly).

                              Okay, back to the OP.
I would be willing to bet that this is also the guy who complains about how accountants are nothing but an overpaid waste of space (yeah bud, see you come tax time and I'll show you what a waste of space we are). Probably also thinks that there is nothing special about pharmacists either (yeah, just dispense pills out, find label and count, not hard, right ).
As a general rule of thumb, you don't insult the professions you may eventually need, we have ways of screwing you over without commiting malpractice (for example, it is perfectly legal for a tax preparer to not maximize a person's deductions, as long as they have not claimed that they have... as far as the IRS is concerned, if some idiot wants to pay more than they have to, all the better).
