  • Jayne Cobb ha... coffee sleeve?

I was tired of burning my fingers on my starbucks recycled mug. So I decided to do a little Brown Coat magic and make this.

It didn't take a lot... just about a half day of knitting (I use looms*). Originally I was going to secure it with buttons but then realized... Jayne wouldn't have buttons! Ma Cobb would have put a pompom on it!

The pattern's pretty easy - just 60 rows of knit1/perl1 and then secure it in the right shape for a mug. I did 2-ply on this cos my softest red/orange/yellow balls were already rolled as such, but normally I'd be doing single ply.

I may make other versions cos I have a lot of yarn & colors to pick from, but those will probably have buttons vs pompoms on them.

For my first, however... I wanted something that stood out a little.

    * forgot to mention the loom I used: the yellow scarf loom. I used only one side and only 17 of the 18 pegs. (also on mine I switched pegs with a blue loom so that I could remember which were knit & which were perl pegs. yes you can take the pegs out, how cool is that?

How cute. I crochet, but don't have any mugs to put these around.

Careful now, FOX might try to issue a cease and desist letter if the catch wind of this. As if they don't have anything better to do.

The mug is pretty easy to get really. And it's why I needed a sleeve in the first place. It's a $1, 100% recycled mug from Starbucks. Nice mug but no insulation.

Looking at Etsy it looks like I'm not the only one who's considered knitting sleeves for these mugs. And yes, I am considering whether or not I should start selling other patterns of sleeves... I've been picturing say grey ones, purple ones, brown... but with buttons vs pompoms. Or glass beads. (seriously there's some pretty stuff in the craft section). I already have some brown, blue, and fall-leaf style buttons for experiments.

But I'm going to knit my mug scarves first and then decide how to secure them. Oh and I'm varying the pattern too. For Jayne & my brown scarf I did a basic knit/perl but for my purple I'm doing knit/perl on one row and then straight knit on the next etc. Might do some where the border is knit-row/perl-row while the center is just knit. (i've done regular scarves like that before anyway)

The Jayne-sleeve of course is just for me.

It is cute, I'll admit it. I just think that FOX could worry about other things. I'm glad that you described the mug. I've been looking for a replacement one for work. One with no insulation isn't going to do me much good. If I did get a crocheted sleeve, I'd want it TARDIS themed.

              Love your cozy PE.

And wow, fma! Does FOX have no shame? (yeah, stupid question.) Love the title on that piece too. Would also be interesting to get hold of the wardrobe person from the series (Philip Maldonado?) and find out if the hat in question came from an already established manufacturer, then sic them on Fox.

I like this, it would be good even for disposable cups. With many places giving sleeves with them, which is just one more thing to throw away, it'd be nice to have an alternative.

I have this one from Target (except mine's pink). It's well insulated - keeps my drink hot even when I don't drink any until I get to work but never burns my hand - and closes securely so I don't spill in my car (I spilled so much in my old car and when I leased a new one I decided I needed something a little safer in case I don't end up buying the car at the end of the lease), fits in the cup holder, and is easy to toss in my lunch bag at the end of the day.

Heh. I did think about doing a TARDIS one. But not yet. Right now I'm trying a green one with borders & an X knitted into it via knit/perl

and i took the jayne sleeve & mug to our fav no-kill shelter yesterday for the weekly dog walk. (same place we got our pooch from). On a previous visit I'd been wearing my "fishsticks & custard please" shirt & the man who owned the dog boarding kennel* cracked up. The next week he gave me a used Entertainment Weekly with the Doctor on the cover.

He saw the sleeve and cracked up. I may make him a couple as a gift depending on how much time I have.
