  • For Those Of Us Who Have Lost Pets

I don't know if I truly believe in the Rainbow Bridge, but it does give so much comfort when I ponder it. In only 36 years, I've seen too many pets pass on (especially the rats. Damn their short lives!).

And so, every so often, I find myself hoping that it is real, so that I can see my furry companions again I miss them all.

I'll give quick stories about two of them, and a few links for everybody. If you've lost a pet, and would like to tell us about him/her/it, please do. Animals so improve our lives.

First: Opey. My Irish Setter that I got when I was 15. Purebred, with a white blotch on her chest, just under her neck. Most obedient dog I've ever had. When she was 9 years old, her health took a major downturn, very rapidly. At the beginning of the week, she was happy, healthy. At the end of the week, she could barely move. With what the vet had said in the past, we were pretty sure there was nothing we could do to help (I wish that I knew then what I know now! She probably had diabetes, dammit!). We were going to take her in to have her put to sleep on Monday, and this was Sunday.

I went to my room to see her, where she was laying on her pillow, and told her how much she was loved, and would be missed. But I didn't want her to be in pain, and so I was now giving her permission to pass away, to let go of the pain. She opened her eyes when I was done, and I'm fairly certain that was when she passed away. Like she had been waiting for my permission.

Half an hour later, my mom checked on her, and she had passed on. I buried her out back. I still miss her, to this day.

Second, Ralph, my pet rat. Gentlest creature you would ever see. Always so happy to see me, and he'd happily ride around the house on my shoulder, and allow himself to be petted by anybody. He loved all his treats, but especially yogurt covered raisins. Putting him to sleep hurt horribly. But I couldn't keep him any longer, not with the pain he was in.

So, those are just two of the critters I hope to see again. I desperately hope the Rainbow Bridge is real, just to be together with them again.
