Old story, but depressingly true. I suppose he could easily point out that their error prevented him from earning the money to pay for his stay. It used to be the case that people imprisoned by error were awarded compensation.

There was something recently about prisoners being released early due to overcrowding and being given a subsistence allowance, but I can't remember the details.
