From the news reports on the incident, it appears that there is a single possibly-crazy man out there who is the prime suspect. Whether he is homeless or not is largely irrelevant.

A lot of people have reported that on that day, there was a 40-ish man with salt and pepper hair going door to door begging for money with a story about a flat tire. In more than one case, he entered a residence or apartment building. He was in the right place at the right time to have been the culprit.
