  • The Punisher: War Zone

    http://www.punishermovie.com/

I LOVE the Punisher. He is my favorite comic character, simply because of his complex psychology and anti-superhero tactics (torturing and murdering bad guys instead of putting them in jail so they can just break out again). So far Hollywood has fracked up twice on making Punisher movies (the first one was bad, the second one...dear God, strike that memory from my brain). I am wary of giving them a third chance.

BUT Marvel is finally making their own movies. And they are using Jigsaw, one of very few recurring Punisher villains (for obvious reasons). And as much as I am startled by the casting of the stupid guy from "Rome", he looks a lot like Frank from the Marvel Knights series.

But just once, ONCE, I would like to see the white boots and gloves. I know they're impractical, but it's my favorite Punisher costume! >whines<

there was one in the late 80s starring Dolph Lundgren where he fights the Yakuza, I haven't seen it but I've hears it's pretty bad. I thought the one with Thomas Jane was good, especially after seeing the extended version. Sure, it wasn't total gore and they took liberties with the story line, but do you really expect hollywood to have the balls to take something written by Garth Ennis and keep it intact? Of course not, and if they did the parental watchdog groups would be shitting golden puppies. I do, however, think they need to give Ennis more creative control than they did with the previous movie.
The Punisher just isn't a hollywood hero, heck I think they made the guys in Sin City look too much like good guys as much as I loved the movie, but with both series I'm happy with what they have gotten to the silver screen considering the amount of crap they likely had to go through with the MPAA, movie execs, etc

In the Thomas Jane movie they screwed up a great storyline, screwed up a great bad guy (the Russian) and completely changed Frank's origin story.

My thinking is: Frank's family was killed accidentally in a Mafia shootout. Since it wasn't intended, he now realizes that innocent people can be hurt by bad guys even if the bad guys aren't specifically out to get them. So he just has to kill all the bad guys first.

In the movie, his family was specifically targeted by bad guys (John Travolta wtf?). Once those bad guys were dead, OK, revenge taken, story is over. He has no reason to go after all the bad guys since the ones responsible are now dead.

Of course if you agree with the interpretation in 'Born' then Frank's family was a sort of sacrifice he had to make to keep fighting his war. That's a really interesting way to look at it too.
