They cancelled the video game (also to start the original cast as mentors), so I guess they decided to make a movie...

The game hasn't been cancelled completely, just that Activision isn't publishing it (dumb-ass move on their part, their GB games way back when put Activision on the map). They're looking for a new publisher for a release next year (although given that Sony has the franchise rights, I'm wary about a redux of their 'anti-piracy' rootkit from awhile ago). Rumor has it that EA will take it up.
