Somehow I doubt it was asshole customers. If it were he'd have probably been more vocal about the why.

I suspect more just general depression. "I hate my life, I can't take it any more" sort of thing.

Poor guy. To be driven to that. Yikes. I have often wondered how I'd do that if I were ever going to, and burning has never crossed my mind. That's got to be a horrific way to off yourself.
