    Unless I'm wrong you don't see gators that often in Jax. Down here, if it's water (fresh, salt, brackash) , assume there's a threat in it.

    But still - the dog should have been on a leash.

      Yeah, if you live in Florida you should assume that there is that danger in lakes, ponds, streams, etc. Just like you should know that anytime you step foot in the ocean you're taking your chances.

      When you enter the water anywhere you are in "the wild"- no matter how populated, urbanized the area is you are no longer on human turf.
