And this is why incognitocook is incognito. I made the mistake of letting a few people from work add me on FB, so I said nothing about work on FB. (If you can't say something nice, don't say anything where people who can make your life miserable find out about it.) If you ARE going to rant about work on FB, don't allow coworkers to friend you and lock down your privacy settings on pretty much everything to "Friends Only". Even then, you're taking a risk as your friends may want to discuss it with you publicly somewhere.

I rant about work in private chats with a few trusted friends, on here, and on an incognito Twitter account. For the last two options, my name, location, place of work, co-workers' names, etc., are all left secret. Sometimes, I don't tweet until a couple of days later and then tweet like it just happened. Just in case, of course, it's not like that account has many followers.

Basically, this girl getting herself fired for saying something about her customers or company publicly online is really her own fault. I don't think employers should be looking at your facebook page like that, but the fact does remain that they do and you have to be careful.

Many potential employers will check FB, too.

That's why we try to discourage people from naming themselves or their place of employment. We want them to have a safe place to vent, and don't want them to get fired over it.

Even I'm a little paranoid about disclosing where I worked, even though my current job isn't customer-related, I quit my retail jobs over 20 years ago, and none of my old places are even in existence anymore. One of them, the entire chain went under.

There was another whole thread somewhere (I believe in General Work Chat) where we discussed whether or not that should be and I had a whole big rant there about it. lol

And CS isn't a completely safe place either. I would be so fired if my employer saw the things I post here. That's why I hide the name of my workplace, its location and the names of people I post about. Fortunately it doesn't seem as though the company is actively spying on its employees' social networking communications, and none of my co-workers or managers know I post here.

I agree. When I post stories, I change names, times, genders and am deliberately very vague about certain things to try and make it as "un-obvious" as possible what or who I am really talking about. It's just common sense IMO.
Exactly the sort of things we advocate here.

Also worth noting that the server is in the UK. I'm not one hundred percent sure as I've not checked the regulations closely on this, but we have something over here called the Data Protection Act. The short version of my understanding of this legislation is that if anyone wants to know your IP or email address, I am required to provide them with a piece of rope to piss up.

This isn't the only way that they could come for members, but it's a nice little defence.

thing is people set your FB settings to PRIVATE and then don't have your BOSS/manager etc. as your friend on fb (because come on your manager is NOT your friend.)

hell. since the day i got facebook i've set everything to pvt so if you're not on my friends list you can't see a damn thing on my profile except my name and profile pic.

keeps every random person out there from reading everything about me etc.
