It seems to be less of a trailer and more of a proof-of-concept piece to woo studio execs. Either way, it's certainly.... different from the unterrible MK movie and its embarrassing sequel.

If the film follows the concept, then it takes away the supernatural elements of the story (Outworld, demons, Elder Gods, etc) and takes everything in an entirely different direction. That may not be such a bad thing, considering the "story" of the original game was just a means to an end; a way to assemble a group of fighters to rip each other's spleens out and offend soccer moms and politicians. The story we get in the clip is also just a means to an end, which is equally implausible... but interesting (honestly, "Scorpion being a convicted murderer/assassin makes more sense than a Chinese ninja in a banana-yellow costume, especially since there were no ninjas in China. Sorry, always been a pet peeve of mine).

They tried sticking to the source material once (more or less) and it was okay. However, everything was downplayed to be as harmless as possible to appeal to a wider (re: younger) audience. But thanks to the popularity of "torture-porn" films that have caught on so well in the last 5 years, what they're going for this time around is surprisingly intriguing. I mean, if you're going to make a movie featuring buckets of gore and merciless killings, it might as well be Mortal freaking Kombat.

I think they could have tried a little harder with Baraka. A doctor who goes nuts so he gives himself spikes and arm blades? I think if anyone was going to be a doctor going insane, it'd be Cabal.

If I remember correctly, Scorpion actually did belong to a rival clan of Japanese assassins that had been targeted by the Chinese Lin Kuei, who sent in Sub-Zero to do the deed (I also believe there was a clip from Mortal Kombat: Mythologies where Subby gets rather miffed at being called a "ninja"). Also, from what I recall from his bio in the first game, Scorpion was given his costume, "to mock the Lin Kuei with its cowardly yellow color." Maybe his Netherealm bosses have a bad sense of humor?

...yeah, I've played way too many of these games.

Still, if they were going to do some sort of intercity gang warfare type of battle.. why not make a movie based on Final Fight or Streets of Rage?

I'm incredibly cynical about movies made out of video games, not least cuz some have been spectacularly effed up *cough*Legend Of Chun Li*cough* and the effed up ones are nearly always the ones which try to deviate from the plot and edit the characters.

I think I'm a Polly-Anna because I just went OMG JERI RYAN AS SONJA *fangirlsquee*. And yes, that made me happy. I loved the concept and yes, I do realize that the actual movie would probably suck. But man, I'm hoping it would suck in that cult type of way if that make sense.

Johnny Cage did however have a totally hilarious move in the second game, I think; the ballkicking one. XD Tho, obviously, it doesn't work if you play as him against Mileena or Kitana.
