Oddly that isn't really all that shocking... wait I have reasons!

Up at "the lake" as a kid there was always "swimmer's itch." This was apparently caused by (some small annoying organism) that lurked in the water and, by transference, on your skin. If you didn't dry off quite well when you left the water they would burrow into your skin, die, and make you scream from terrible itching. Good times!

Yeah, so scarily not so surprising!
