Did they get a last influx of little donations or a few sympathetic people with deep pockets that were holding out till the end?

I mixture of the 2 actually. There was 1 sympathetic person with deep pockets holding out 'til the end, however that person's donation wasn't enough to get them all the way to their goal.

It was enough, however for people to realize that getting to the goal was now do-able.

And so out of all the backers, about 1/4 of them were from that last day.
