DFW area help.

So it's looking like hubs, the kidlets and I will be moving to DFW. I have never lived outside the OKC metro area. I am at a total loss about this.

His new office is in Irving. Do we need to look for something in Irving? Is Irving a nice place to live? What areas/neighborhoods are good for families with children? Where are the grocery stores/shopping centers?

Google maps has not been helpful so far. I have never lived in a "big city" so this is like moving to Manhattan for me.

Father in Law use to work in Irvine. They lived in Grapevine, not too far from Baylor Medical Center. Don't know how it is for the kids, but I thought it was a nice area. Downtown Grapevine had a nice "small town" feel. At least it did 16 years ago.

I think you will like the DFW area. Texas BBQ is the best!

Irving itself is kind of run down or at least it was the last time I was there. However, Las Colinas is only a stone throws away and it's a very nice area. Fort Worth and Arlington are also good places to live and raise a family but your husband would have a bit more of a commute.

One thing your husband will probably like and you too if you get a job here is the lack of state income tax. Groceries tend to be a bit cheaper here too, at least compared to the Tulsa area, where most of my family lives.

Grocery stores are pretty much everywhere. The big ones around here are Krogers and Albertsons. There's also Tom Thumbs, Aldis, and Sprouts. Of course, there's Wal Mart too. If you like going to the mall, there's the Irving Mall, there's also Grapevine Mills which isn't terribly far, and if you want to drive to Dallas there's the Dallas Galleria.

Is it the kind of city where we *need* to live right by where he works?

I ask because he used to live in northern VA and his commute was exactly 1 mile and took him 2 hours.

Do I want a house next to a highway? Is like chic or something?

I feel like such a country mouse.

Meep! 2 hours for a 1 mile commute?! Remind me to never complain about traffic again. You should be fine living a bit away from major freeways. 183 is the main highway that goes through Irving so you'll want somewhere with easy access to that but you don't need to live right off it it either. (The good news is, most places aren't far from a freeway) Depending on where you live, you might even be able to use DART (city bus system) or TRE (light rail) if you have car issues for some reason.

It will vary from area to area. The FIL worked in the Los Colinas area of Irving. He was able to get to/from work in about 30 minutes.

You should check the traffic on Google Maps during what will be his travel times to see what the traffic is like.

After 3 weeks of hubs telling me that he was going to take this job in Dallas. (And me researching schools, checking out houses and locating fabric stores during all this) He's decided that he's going to take a job where he works from home.

Now if all the stress from the past month would go away, that's be great.

Some of it is going to be based on how much money your family makes. There are some nicer parts of Irving (my brother-in-law lives there). Are you planning on moving to a gated community? There are a couple of nice ones in Irving, but the houses there are pricey.

You could also do as others have suggested, and check out Las Colinas, Coppell, Grapevine, and maybe even Southlake, Flower Mound, Grapevine, Euless (prounounced You-Less), Bedford, or Lewisville. Though I would suggest avoiding Lewisville, because that means driving in on I-35, which can be a mess. You may even want to consider areas to the south of Irving like Grand Prairie, Arlington, Duncanville or Cedar Hill.

Arlington has Rangers Ballpark, AT&T Stadium (Dallas Cowboys), Six Flags, and Hurricane Harbor.

Hurst, Euless and Bedford are near Irving, just on the other side of the airport from Irving. They're decent areas for families. Irving has some iffy places. So does Arlington and Ft. Worth.

I can't sound off on the immediate area myself, but my in-laws live in Arlington and what I've seen of the area is very nice and generally traffic doesn't seem to bad. Maybe it seems that way to me because I grew up in the New England are where highways and whatnot had to be squeezed in around existing communities, while the DFW area was built more with the highways in mind and actually has room for them.

Time for a sitdown. That is honestly one of the most selfish things I've heard him say in a while, and that's saying something. He's asking you to give up something you obviously love to do, and one of the very, very few escapes that you have. That is beyond unacceptable.
