'Let landlords pay their servants sufficient wages and the bottom of the bill,write attendance,leaving a blank for the person to giveth what he pleases. For every traveller would prefer the method of having only one person to pay. You shall find it much easier to make the landlord an allowance for that purpose than to cram the hungry jaws of his gaping cormorants who are so irregularly fed'.
