  • YOINK. Ahhhh. Advice?

Ok so yesterday I had a tooth pulled. The previous night I'd been up about every 20 minutes putting more topical numbing agent on it (fun fact, anbesol dissolves nail polish) and hadn't gotten much sleep. The dentist was actually very gentle and I'm not in much pain today, back at work (though I did oversleep a bit yesterday due to not having had any rest in 24 hours + percoset...that's good stuff ).

Only problem is it's soft food for the next few days. ANy suggustions? Gonna pick up some instant mashed spuds and mac n cheese after work, we have eggs for scrambled eggs, and we have oatmeal, but I'd welcome any ideas.

Rice, pudding, and soup, just off the top of my head.

I had an impacted tooth that had to be cut in half and pulled last summer. The doc should have given you paperwork - or at least verbal advice - on what to do for the next several days. Two of the notable things should have been keeping the gap left by the tooth packed with gauze (if it's still bleeding) and gently rinsing the gap with warm, salty water several times a day (immediately after all meals and also at other times). Trust me on this one -- those are REALLY important things to do, so please do yourself a favor and don't forget. Failure to do so can result in "dry socket," and you don't want that.

As for food, yeah -- mashed pretty much anything, pudding or plain ice cream (no nuts or other add-ins) if you feel like dessert, soft rice/pasta with butter (not al dente; you want 'em squishy so you don't have to chew - take small bites and cut up the pasta if needed), plain broth, and the like. Resist the urge to go for anything you might have to chew. One other very important thing -- No long-noodle pasta (cut it up really small), and NO STRAWS! Avoid doing anything that would create suction/external pressure in your mouth -- you just want food you can shovel in there and swallow.

Thanks EricKei. I do have the post-extraction instructions, and I've been compliant on my meds (though I forgot my antibiotics this morning, dang it). I'll start doing the salt water thing today, I was told not to in the first 24 hours. I can't do plain Ramen (way too much of it in college) but with broth or soft veggies it should be ok. Hubby pureed some aromatic veggies and cooked them with some soft ground beef, which he served me over rice, that was yummy. I don't smoke so no need to stuck on anything for a while.

Carnation Instant Breakfast is good, too.

I did protein shakes a lot when I got my wisdom teeth removed. That and my mom's chicken soup (chicken, carrots, squash, potatoes, and various herbs)...blended until smooth, of course.

When I got my upper teeth pulled out last year in preparation for dentures, I ate a lot of yogurt, pudding, and protein shakes. I also had a lot of soup. The lack of pain was so worth it though.

When I had the anti-snoring surgery I ate nothing but vanilla pudding for two weeks.

When Boyfriend had oral surgery, I made things like chicken and rice soup and baked potato soup then ran them through the blender. The texture on each wound up being close to a thick cream soup. The potato soup especially came out really tasty.

Eep, yeah, meant to say that. Only AFTER bleeding is stopped and you don't need gauze anymore/whatever the doc says to do. Very very gently rinse and let it kinda fall out of yer mouth. (slightly ewww 8p)

Of course if you drink enough rum, you won't need the meds.

From when I broke my jaw when I was 16, I know that Carnation Instant Breakfast is really good stuff. It also comes in a variety of flavora, so you should be able to find something you like. And for extra nutrition, you can always add a banana or some other fresh fruit into it, and just throw the whole thing into the blender.

                            There's that, of course.
