  • What do I do with this flooded light bulb?

Three days ago, just as a major heat wave was about to strike, our central air froze up. I found this out when I noticed water dripping through the hallway light and into the floor. I had to remove the glass globe over the light (it was full to the rim) and then take the bulb out, which was also full of water.

It’s an LED bulb that looks like an incandescent bulb. Somehow, it became completely full of water. It looks like a snow globe, with just a tiny air bubble at the top.

So what the heck do I do with this thing now? My google-fu is failing me. These things should be recycled, but can I recycle a flooded bulb? Is it safe to throw out?

The manufacturer (Cree) is a commercial supplier that doesn’t even have consumer customer service.

Could just punch a small hole in it to drain it, wait for it to dry and see if'n it still works. Or if you want to know what makes it tick, pull the globe off to see the insides.

Check with the local landfill/dump to see if they accept electronic waste; they most likely won't care WHY you need to throw it out. If they do, you can head on over there with any other stuff like that that needs to go (e.g. computer parts, old cellphones, etc).

Just having water in it should be no obstacle to it being recycled; it definitely doesn't cancel the need for it to be sent to a specialist rather than just dumped in the trash.

If you are worried about the water when recycling it, check to see if the glob is made of glass or plastic. Most LED bulbs I have seen are made of plastic. This would make it a little easier to punch a hole in it. If it's not a big deal to you, just treat it like any other E-Waste you have for recycling.
