Those pictures reminded me of what we found in our yard last week--a nest of baby cottontails. No we didn't get pics :-(
The dachshund mix was on his leash nosing around and jumped back. Fearing snakes, DH went over to check it out, and found the nest with 4 babies in it. We were more concerned about the other dogs getting to them, so we put a sturdy tomato cage around the nest. I looked up online what to do about them; I knew the best thing was to just leave them alone if possible. I got a laugh out of one site that said, "If you have to chase a baby rabbit, it does not need rescuing." Several sites indicated that they would be able to cope for them selves after 5-10 days, and mamma rabbit would nurse them at dusk and dawn for about 5 minutes each time. Sure enough, 2 days later, the nest was open and they were gone. And the tomato and squash plants have been nibbled down to the ground. I guess they don't care for gourds...yet.
