No offense to Germany or Germans.
So my mother goes to this convention called Celebration of Needlework every year, and apparently one of the women who coordinates it also organizes trips to various places around to the world to see various things relating to needlework, knitting, sewing, etc. They just finished one such trip to England, and the next one is to Germany.
And out of nowhere, my mother wants to go.
Now, I have nothing against Germany, but I just don't understand why my mother would suddenly want to go on a trip like this. She doesn't speak a lick of German, and I don't see how she can justify spending family money on something like that. My father has been trying for years to plan a family vacation to Ireland. I'm 3/4 Irish, and just about my entire extended family is Irish (except for my paternal grandfather's line, which is Chinese, so I'm 1/4 Chinese), and I would LOVE to take a trip to Ireland (and hopefully be able to spend at least a day in London as well). But instead, my mother has to go and fly off to Germany (and Belgium) to see how lace is made? (That's the only specific thing she mentioned). I'm sorry, but that strikes me as completely ridiculous and unfair, especially when we haven't had a family vacation in 5 years, but both my parents have been on several trips (granted, most of the ones my father went on were business/professional trips, but still).
Now, this has only come up this evening, and last I heard my mother and father were discussing the feasibility of her going to Germany, so it's far from set in stone. But I think I'll need to have a discussion with my mother about this, because the more I think about it, the more upset it makes me. I have enough money saved up that I could go to Europe if I wanted to, but only if I was going with the rest of the family so that I'd only have to pay a portion of the expense rather than the whole shebang.
This is made even more irritating by the fact that I missed out on a chance to go to Ireland last year. My grandmother (who was born in Ireland and emigrated when she was 18) had expressed a desire to go back one more time while she was still in reasonably good shape (she's starting to get arthritis in her back), so my mother and aunts took her there. At first, though, it looked like one of my aunts couldn't make it, so they were prepared to extend her slot to an "elder grandson" (ha!) which would have been me. And it would have been relatively cheap for me (only a couple grand). But in the end, my aunt was able to make it, so that opportunity evaporated.
Seriously.....if she ends up going to Germany, then the rest of the family should get to go somewhere as well. It's only fair.
[/end rant]
