Hehe, I just saw that you had the most recent post..then I read it. When I was in KW, I don't think it rained at all. That was in the summer, though.

My aunt lives in Houston, and one year when they had one of their big floods (several years ago, I guess), her ex-husband's porsche was parked on the street and drowned.

I realized just now that my description didn't really tell how deep the water was. Well, the average man walking down the street in front of The Bar, with no waves coming from jackasses, would be about thigh deep.

And BE, it rains here all the time, even in the summer. It is, after all, the tropics! Now, while we do have some stretches where there is no rain for a while, typically in the summer there will be a short shower in the late morning or so, and then all clear.

Stuff like yesterday, while uncommon, is not unheard of. At least once a year or so, as I said.

Had to take the Friday off cuz I just could not get into work. O.o I also had a nightmarish journey home Thursday; I had to leave my motorbike at my boyf's house and call my dad to pick me up cuz there were no cabs. My boyf was trapped at his work so therefore I couldn't stay at his. I was so worried about my dad coming out, but he insisted. There was no way I was going to put myself thru it all over again just to get to work Friday.

I've got the weekend off and Monday so hopefully the snow will melt before Tuesday.

We got snow beginning yesterday afternoon, but it finally stopped after 11 last night, switched over to sleet and that finally tapered off around 5 ish this morning.

Originally, the weather forecasters were predicting 6-12 inches for our part of the state. Greensboro instead had 5.5 inches with another .25-.5 inch of sleet on top of that.

Needless to say, the Kitty was packed yesterday during most of the day with almost nonstop lines. I worked 9:30 until 5 on register and we were ringing up everything. Luckily for me, Mom and I made our errands Thursday afternoon (I left work around 2:30 so we'd have plenty of time) and got to the post office/filed the car with gas/went to Wallyworld for a few things. So Friday when I left work, all I had to do was pick up paper towels (which we both forgot we needed Thursday) and head straight home.

I finally got out of the store around 5:15 and Mom was already waiting out front. Let's just say the ride home was long . . .even before we got out of the parking lot.

People don't know how to drive on this stuff, but then we don't get much of it and when we do, it sends everybody into panic mode. One genuis in a Dodge Durango was trying to make it up the drive leading to the main road, but wasn't applying enough gas and ended up sliding down all the way back to the parking lot (the road is at an incline b/c the shopping center is in at the bottom of a hill.) As soon as he slid backwards into the parking lot, Mom simply eased our little Toyota up the drive and we made it to the road fine.

Roads were getting slushy but there were slick spots nonetheless, as apparently one unlucky driver of a Jaguar sedan discovered about three blocks away once we hit the main road. The Jag was sitting askew on the curb on the opposite side of the road and a line of vehicles were lined up behind it trying to get around it. No way was that car moving without a tow truck.

And then you have those who drive too slow . . . one little compact was in front of us by the time we reached the intersection at Cone blvd. Mom stayed a good distance away just in case he stalled out and got stuck or started fishtailing . . . luckily he did neither but apparently was heading in the same general direction because we both went straight through the light and then we got stuck behind him again at the next light, where we were waiting to make a left turn.

On this road, there's a bridge that's just been rebuilt in 2008 . . . the Billy "Crash" Craddock Memorial Bridge no less (he's a country singer who had a couple of hits back in the 70's and known for being a hound dog - but I digress) and Mom and I were holding our breath hoping this car would make it up the hilly bridge . . .

It barely did. Once it got to the next stoplight, Mom pulled alongside him and when the light turned green, we got away from him and managed to make it to the next light, where we had another SUV doofus sitting right in the middle of the intersection with tires spinning and other cars from the opposite lane trying to get around him. Luckily we were turning right, so we were able to get away from that one and from there we managed to make it home without too much trouble, even though it took us a good 35 minutes from the Kitty to the house.

So other than the 35 minute ride home, it was a busy day. I have to admit though . . . all those Christmas decorations outside look much prettier in the snow.

Now we are expecting to have black ice in the morning . . . and I have to go to work tomorrow for a couple of hours to get an HBA order sent off (which has to be sent off by 3 p.m.) Although the main road in front of my house is cleared off pretty good (snowplows came down right after 8 this morning and started moving snow off the road) the side road past the house is gunked up with snow where the snowplow that came through this afternoon pushed snow right across the road . . . hindering us from getting home (we had to run out right after lunchtime to get drinks for my brother and our weekly hot dogs.) Luckily we just managed to get across the side that had the shorter pile of snow and get into our driveway just fine.

Another thing we discovered: Mom's wheelchair is useless in the snow. She thought she could just plow through the few inches that was on the ramp when we went out earlier. She got a few feet to the corner to turn right to go off and got stuck. Tires spinning, chair stuck. We ended up just leaving the chair where it was and she managed to get down the rest of the ramp to the car (my brother got out there later and found the two levers in the back which takes the chair out of gear so it can be manually pushed and got it back onto the porch.)

I guess next winter we'll see outfitting the chair with a pair of skis.

Can I come over? It's only about a 4-5 hour drive, I guess...
Back when I was going to Neptune regularly it was about 4 and a half hours normally, 6 hours around rush hours, and that was not going up 95 the whole way as I always avoided NYC ...

Im in PA, its up to about 10 inches now I think. I hate snow.

The funny part is the hospital I work for is offering to get people picked up to ensure they make it to work...but theyre not telling them they dont take them back home. If they come in, theyre stuck. Lol. Thankfully i have off this weekend.

That seems rather underhanded. Seriously, they are telling staff they'll get them to work, then not bothering to help them find a way home? What kind of bullshit is that? And how do they expect their staff TO get home?

It's snowing here...maybe an half-inch to an inch or so... I'm curled up on my couch with my down throw and my computer, with a lovely view through the swirling snow of the house across the way with the roof lined with colored lights. Though the cars going by on the highway I live on kinda ruins it..

I'm thinking there is hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps in my near future.

Well, got our 2 feet of snow and then some. They stopped the Metro buses and at least some of the Metro trains. I went downstairs to take a look out front and the streets were plowed and the sidewalks (what I could see in front of my apartment building) were shoveled. I hope the people that drive the cars parked outside don't have to drive anywhere soon because those cars were freakin' buried. Some of the stores stayed open; at least 3 people came trudging in with grocery bags.

I think I'll have to make the trudge to the store tomorrow. I forgot to get my Excedrin Migraine and took my last two pills today. Gggrrr.....

It remains to be seen if my place of business will be open on Monday.

....and I love dear ol' Arkansaw!

There was a bit of freezing fog when I left KS this morning, and now I'm at home. Highs tomorrow...40's! (Am very worried about a friend who is still trying to get home to VA. According to Facebook, she's already had a minor wreck. )

*Glares at snow outside. Glares at broken furnace. Glares at the CS people bragging about their heaters.*

Abbreviated time line on NW's furnace: Friday Dec 4th, furnace pilot has gone out. Emergency after hours maintenance waited til 8AM Saturday to respond. Problems continued off and on throughout week. Saturday Dec 12th Furnace DIES! All calls for maintenance are met with grumblings about ordering parts and blah blah. Saturday Dec 17th, furnace FINALLY fixed. This is not the last management has seen of me *goes back to glaring*

I also had my own little version of a snow storm yesterday, it freaking poured down rain for about six-plus hours. There was a river of water in the street, thought my house was going to float away!
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.
