Sometimes everything that is going badly in your life merges together into a perfect {blank} storm. Last night was one of those nights for me.
Things you should know before I start my story:
1) My university is at the top of a very large hill. The whole city is very mountainous so getting around is really hard on the legs. Especially as most of the stores at either on Main Street (the bottom of the city), or are much higher up than the school.
2) I haven't received my student loan for this semester yet. This means that if I want to buy things like food, I have to call home and ask my dad for money. I don't really like doing this, as things are tight back home. So I usually have very little to no money. That means no cash for cabs. Also, because I had no money all semester while I was waiting for my student loan, my cell phone has been suspended.
3) My dad sent me a grocery store gift card for easter. This is not a bad thing. But it means that I can only grocery shop at one store, which is on Main St.
4) Buses here don't run after 7pm. Even if they did, I have now money for bus fare.
Now let us begin:
Last night I decided to head down the grocery store and pick up some stuff. I'm going home next week, so I really only needed to grab milk and juice. As I was walking down the hill, I noticed my right calf felt a little tight. I shrugged this off, however, as I was completely out of liquids and didn't want to have to walk back empty handed. I was already partly down the hill, and didn't want to have to attempt the trip another night.
So I get down to the grocery store just as it is about to close. (It takes a while to get down the hill.) I grab my groceries, then stop at Tim Horton's for a hot chocolate. As I'm walking up the hill, my leg starts to sting a little. I stop once or twice, but always keep going. In front of a church, I stumble. Now the stinging in my leg is an all out pain. I sit down on a step in front of the church. I decide to just sit, enjoy my hot chocolate, and wait for the pain to pass.
Except it does not pass.
The pain in my leg starts to become very hard to stand, and I can't seem to get up. It's snowing, and actually pretty cold. I get nervous. What am I supposed to do? I can't call anyone because I didn't see any point in carrying a cell phone I can't use with me. So I do the only thing I can, start screaming at cars for help. No one stops, and I get more scared.
Because of the cold weather, there is no one walking down the street. So all I can do is call out. Still, no one stops. Part of my brain reasons that maybe they can't here me. Perhaps I just look like I'm sitting down taking a break. Maybe they think I'm a hitchhiker or a vagrant. Still, I'm a little surprised no one helps me. Not even the police stop when they pass me. Eventually, the pain dulls enough that I can get up and walk back down to Tim Horton's. There, a woman offers to give me a drive.
Once I get back to school, Security and an RA help me back to my room. I put my groceries away, and think the whole ordeal is over. It took me a long while to get to sleep because of the pain.
Then this morning I get a call from security. It turns out that in the middle of all the craziness last night, I had dropped my wallet. A woman who works at the grocery store had found it in front of the church and was holding it there for me. So I called asking if she could run it up to the school, because I'm injured and completely unable to walk down to the store and back. She informs me that she walks everywhere, so she can't take it up to the school.
Luckily for me, I found one of the girls on my floor has a car. I've asked her to drive me down to the store. She says she will take me sometime before 3pm, which is when the woman who found my wallet will get off work.
So I'm sitting here, half-awake, and in pain waiting for that knock on my door. I'll tell you how this all ends once I get back.
