My car overheated a few weeks ago. I wouldn't say billowing but there was smoke. Had to get a new radiator.

This doesn't seem like the same magic smoke in laptops, in that many pieces are still working just fine. Let smoke out of a laptop, and not much will still be working, if any of it is at all.

I had some magic fire come out of my microwave last year. A quick run to Sams Club for a new one fixed that quickly.

I hope that you only need a new battery, Pederson.

Also was your battery old at all? I change mine every 4 years or so.

I am betting that the new radio is defective and it drained the battery.

I am also betting that the jumper cables got crossed. If the fireworks were caused by a short in the car, you would have melted your battery leads long before.

If I am right, your repairs will be cheap. *crosses fingers*

Since the radio was not physically connected (I've been trying to make it work, but leaving it disconnected when not working on it), having it drain the battery at that point works be mighty impressive

Also, I suspect the short (if I am right) is brand new, occurring yesterday.

Possibly naively, I am expecting it to be relatively cheap.

FIL managed to let the magic smoke out of the router. It was stealth smoke though - its only sign was a bad smell. Jackdaw had to explain that it sounded like the magic smoke got out, and unfortunately there was no way to put it back in. I think that when woodworking is possible again the router will be much more robust, as it wasn't that great to begin with.
