I use my iPhone on break and lunch.

I will often sign on via the customer-use hotspot and my iPod touch when on break (and occasionally when I'm not on break if I have a spare moment )

I'll check this and Fratching a lot during my office hours. If the IT is too busy to fix it so we can print, then they're too busy to be monitoring me.

I'm at work & I can read & post. I work at a local community college & we have a barracuda (spelling?) filter & as long as the filter doesn't block it - we can be on it. I also only work part-time a little only 20+ hours a week & rarely get SC's here. Thankfully :-)

I check in and post from work when I want a break from what I'm doing. It gives my eyes and mind a rest from the mentally intensive stuff I do all day. And I'm usually on here all of my lunch time.

I only log on from home.

However, our internet policy at work is very lax, so as long as you get your work done and you don't download illegal stuff, it's OK. I usually check my private mail account and/or read the news during breaks.

I only log on if I check my email and see I have a PM I want to respond to. Otherwise I wait until I get home.

I can log on at work as long as I keep taking calls. I minimize the internet screen so it doesn't distract me. If it gets really busy I just log off and come back later. I do use internet for legit work reasons, too, including reading our company website. Reading CS between calls helps keep me sane at work.

If management ever says a word to me, I'll remind them they let a certain person spend her entire four hour shift on facebook and cell phone pc's (cell phone in one ear, company headset in the other, talking to her mother or her kids while talking to customers on the work line. Not kidding. Wish I was.)

I have to be careful with what I look at while working. Not that I download pron at work...but even non-pron content can lead to trouble. One of my coworkers (who sits next to the boss ) loves to chat on Facebook, and has been warned about it. But, since I'm the network admin, and I can get my work done quickly...I can do pretty much what I want. I don't spend all day on CS, but I do need a break from spreadsheets now and then.

I work from home for a company that doesn't remotely monitor its employees (and I run the work apps in a Windows 7 VM under Linux anyway) so I can do pretty much whatever I want.

Grad student, the internet use policy is pretty much "nothing illegal". I think there's a "nothing offensive" clause in there too, but to the best of my recollection that only applies to computer labs where someone might see. (And the examples they give wouldn't cover CS at all). As for why I do it - I'm currently stuck between debugging something that should, by all the debugging tips, work, and designing a UI. Me being unqualified to design a UI goes beyond the fact that I have Asperger's, and have never taken a usability course. I could sit staring at my screen, but if I completely zone out when I can't think of anything then I'm never going to get everything done. I probably have the balance wrong, but that's the danger of my only deliverable having a 2-year due date. And no action plan. I'm about at par for grad students as far as I can tell. (I was, for a short time last month, on schedule to graduate on time. No one does that).

I was actually able to finish my master's on time. However, I've pushed back my Ph.D. graduation date no less than 4 times. Par for the course.

Actually a lot of people in math apparently do it on time or under time. But generally on in engineering. There's a trick where if you finish less than a month over time (i.e. before full tuition refund date) it counts as on time, and some people manage that. But I'm tutoring this term, so it's unlikely.

I get on because I work from home for myself. Thus, no potential problems. I just can't post about very many of the people I deal with, because so many of my jobs are so specific that they could easily be found via google - that's why my infrequent posts are often about annoying trends rather than individual customers.
