  • My poor Gramma

Could you guys start praying for her/sending her happy thoughts? She has advanced Macular Degeneration that keeps switching back to wet (active) whenever the doctor thinks it's starting to get better. Unfortunately, her favorite thing to do is sew. She makes these amazing pillows, but she's having such a hard time with her eyes as they are, its frustrating.
She is my favorite old lady ever, and she would do anything for me. I mean, she's giving me her $400 sewing machine because I told her I wanted to learn how to use one. She's still sewing on it, but she's so upset that she's having problems seeing she thinks I'm mad whenever I have to go over there to re-thread it or fix something small...I'm just upset that she's having such a hard time of it. Right now she's making me some gift bags for the craft show tomorrow, and I'm trying to be there for her in case the machine comes unthreaded, but she thinks I'm over there making sure she doesn't break my machine. I think it's just as hard for her as it is for the rest of us.

Of course I will pray for her and send her tons of happy thoughts. I'm sorry that's happening to her, I'm sure she is upset, it's so hard to deal with and at that age you just don't want to trouble anyone after years of independence.

Yeah, since my grandpa died years ago she's been very upset that she's bothering my family to take her to the store and such, but she lives literally next door so it's not as big of a problem. I know my mum is kind of mean to her, and I think my grandma is afraid I am going to be too because she needs help so often.

Good thoughts and prayers for her.

Also, here is a link for sewing aids for the visually impaired that might help:

Thanks. I really do love my gramma, she's gone through a lot. It's hard to support her though because my parent's kind of feel like she's dumping everything on them, but she's just not able to do it all and we are super-close, unlike her other kids.

Sending good thoughts and fuzzy kitty snuggles. My grandma has macular too. She can still see shapes but she can't really read or write and she definitely can't drive. She's not really taking it too well...it came on really fast so she's having a hard time adjusting.

Maybe if you sit down and explain to her that you don't feel the same as the others. That you like helping her and to ask when ever she needs help.
My Grandfather has been trying to give everything to me since Nana died. It's like they are panicking, it did help when I talked to him. He still sometimes try to give things to me, but he understands the big things like furniture need to stay at his house with the promise I will take it someday. It's hard to deal with on our end, we love them so much and don't want to see them in pain, also we don't want to think that they are getting old. Sit down with her, explain and tell her that you love her and just want to help. Grandparents are stubborn, but it might make her worry less at the very least.

I might try that. She did request her own table for the craft show tomorrow because I explained there wouldn't be enough room for both of us on one table, so I know she's willing to work with me. She does call when she needs something, but she thinks it's a huge burden for her to ask me because everyone else treats it like one, I just joke with her (I let her know, of course) that if I go over there more than 4 times a day, I want dinner.

This actually brought tears to my eyes since my grandmother also suffered from Macular degeneration.

Many, many hugs and prayers out to you guys - and feel free to PM me if you need to vent or just need an ear about it, ok?

Thanks guys. She is quite frustrated right now, but in all reality, I would be too. I told my mum about this, and she agreed, but I don't know if it'll change her attitude or not. We'll see.
