  • Cool thing for kids!

Some of you may know I'm a plane geek, I really wanted to share this cause I'm a volunteer during the event and this is something I really love.

I wanted to give advance notice that June 11th is international Young Eagle's day, EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) chapters are giving out FREE flights to kids between the ages of 8-17.

In the States I know there are more Chapters who participate but it is a international day, The Young Eagles site doesn't have international chapters listed just yet. I do know chapters will still set up times for kids to fly if you call and ask about Young Eagles. So If you don't see an event where you live but see there is a chapter it doesn't hurt to call and ask.

So if you Know any kids who are interested in flying, or who would like to have a free flight check it out. The kids will get their own log book, and a certificate for free ground school. (I'm totally jealous of that part)
These are great people who are glad to teach about aviation so let people know.

Also if you are interested in small aircraft, experimental planes, or getting your license check out the EAA these are awesome people.

I would like to mention these pilots are paying for everything out of their own pocket, as are the volunteers, we REALLY love what we do. On top of giving free flights after a pilot flies 10 kids the EAA will give the chapter money to send a lucky kid to Airventure's Air academy.

Interesting facts before I finally stop rambling. There are many astronauts in the EAA, also WWII veterans, and test pilots. The best part is you don't have to be any of the above, I barely knew anything when I joined and In my own chapter I know a former test pilot, several veterans, and in my best friend's chapter one of the previously mentioned astronauts.

    Now I'm done rambling....

When my daughter was younger she had fun with this program. The pilot asked who wanted to be up front and she jumped at the chance.

That's awesome Pitmonkey, I'm so glad she did that.

I'm the photographer/parent hand holder/answer of questions/ramp escort / runner in my chapter. I LOVE when the kids are excited, especially when I go though the pictures I have and see them grinning like crazy. Every so often we get a shy or scared kid, I've gotten really good at coaxing them into flying, I love the hugs I get when those kids jump out of the plane after their flight.

Oh this! I knew about it when I was younger... sadly, never got around to it. I was so scattered, still am... *sigh * ...

There IS an international learn to fly day, you could always check around to see if anyone is doing it, my chapter is thinking of doing it. Also intro flights are reasonably priced, I think they are between $50-$90 at flight schools. So if you think you might want to try those, they are similar to what we do, except you get more of a lesson during the flight I believe. Warning: You might become seriously addicted to flying and not want to come back down, or leave the plane and you might feel tempted to squeal after your first flight and tackle hug the pilot....I speak from experience.
