Ok, so I'm sitting on the couch around 2pm today, perusing my favorite site (cs.com of course) and my 20 year old son comes down the steps from his room and begins walking in circles and muttering to himself.
Background: He'd been feeling crappy the past couple of days, but it didn't seem too serious. Sore throat, cough and kind of achy, stuff like that.
I ask him whats up, and he looks at me with this crazed look in his eyes and starts saying "Dude..dude.." like he's talking to one of his friends.
I was alarmed at this point and stood up and noticed he was sweating and shivering at the same time. I touched his forehead and it was so hot that it made my hand really hot. I gave him some advil, which I practically had to put in his mouth and force feed him the water to swallow it with.
So I told him to go upstairs and get dressed and we'd go to urgent care. I sat down on the couch and began to put my shoes on, and he sat down next to me, grabbed my leg and laid in my lap, whimpering.
Now, this is a kid who is sort of a mama's boy, but (like me) is not physically demonstrative AT ALL.
I finally had to go get his jeans myself and dress him and lead him out to my car. The urgent care is around 10 minutes away and about 5 minutes into the ride, he straightens up and looks at me, very confused and asks me how he got in the car and where were we going. I touched his forehead again and, while it was still hot, it was not NEARLY as bad as before. I can only assume that the advil had started to work a bit.
Long story short, we got to the urgent care and they examined him and did something called a 'rapid flu' test on him by sticking a long q-tip looking thing up his nose. A few minutes later they came in and showed us the little square test thing that showed positive for 'flu A', whatever that means. He gave us samples of some decongestant and a prescription for a cough medicine with codeine in it. Also, of course, the typical flu remedies and what not.
Point is: He'll be 21 in August and I'd be hard pressed to remember a time I ever saw him THIS sick. It was truly scary when he was completely out of his mind and babbling incoherently. I've never seen anything like it. The doctor had said he had seen a couple of strains of this really vicious flu in the past several weeks.
Next year he's definitely getting a flu shot.
