I was delivering some papers to a nearby C-Store, picking up the old ones, cashing them out, etc. Said store is in a slightly seedy area, but they apparently have little or no problems with criminals. On this particular day, I found out why.
Ya see, this paper is a small fish in the local pond, as it were, so we try to get stores to put a display copy up by the registers where customers can see them, and keep all of the extras behind the counter, so they don't get stolen. In this particular store, they insist on having all of the papers on the rack by the door.
One day, I asked them why they're not afraid that anyone will steal them. The SM gets this odd grin on his face and says "Oh, that! We're not worried! We all pack!" -- It turns out, part of the reason this store has a reputation for being "safe" is that, some time back, a would-be robber was foiled when he tried to hold up the place, and the staff promptly put over a dozen bullets into him
At another store more recently, I confirmed that they had the same policy when I saw one of the guys loading a shotgun, with the stock on the ground, behind the bulletproof-glass-ensconced counter. His CW saw him doing so, gave him a "Damn, you're an idiot" look, and subtly nudged the muzzle over so that it was pointing straight up instead of more or less **AT** said CW...
