  • Game Designers, I need your help! (And this is easy...)

I'm here in Houston with my niece, and a friend of hers is interested in getting into game design. She's 16 and starting to look at colleges and schools, and wants to know if anyone knows of any schools that have prep courses aimed at game design and such. If you know of any such schools in the Houston/Victoria area, please contatc this young lady at nekochic13@gmail.com.

    Tell her Jester sent you.

    And thank you!

I work in the videogame industry (albeit on and off), so I can have a talk with her if you like, If I don't know the information she's after, I'll sure as heck be able to find out. Depending on what she wants to do in the industry, she may not even need a school that has a prep course, A lot of studios will pick people up based on skill as much as school qualifications. There are several schools in the US that can teach you about game designing, and such, but a lot of those may require a move, if she can't manage a move, there's still plent of ways she can get into game design.

    Email sent, by the way.

Rayven, she seems like a nice enough kid, and very creative (and talkative!), so yeah, any help you could give her would be awesome.

I'll help her out however I can, from hepling her decide which route she wants to go down, help her find places that have classes or do stuff to help out said route, even point her out the stuff she'd need to know, programs she can use in her spare time to get the practice depending on the route she takes, etc etc.

If she's on the creative side of things, that means probably she'll be interested in the artistic side, which, i happen to specialise in! Which also happens to mean that portfolio stuff is more important than Resume Qualifications. I work in recruiting too, so i know this stuff (and as a bonus, it means i have to know a lot about game developing, even if i lack the skills to do so myself)

Personally I'd love to work in the industry as someone who makes or helps to make games myself, but i know i lack the skills and ability to do so, so i f i can help someone who wants to do it and has the ability to, I'm all for helping them out.

One head start would be to make sure she's up on her math.

You can't really get anywhere without a solid math foundation, particularly with anything that isn't art.

Good, then as i said, I can really help her, though it depends specifically on what she wants, I've sent her an email, as I've said, so if you see her ask her to get back to me about it, i emailed her on kevin@avatar-games.co.uk just incase she needs to search her mail or anything.

I doubt I'll see her again. Without going into all the details, she was my niece's roommate's friend's daughter. Seems like a cook enough kid, and I like to help whenever possible, but their circumstances and schedule and mine likely preclude us running into each other again any time soon. (Though I did blow them away with an impromptu magic show....creeped her mother out completely, which is always fun.)
