  • Austin People Please Help

Fiance and I are not having a wedding reception. We want to celebrate with friends, so we want to go out for drinks in Austin with a fairly small group of people. We don't want to do 6th street but we want to go somewhere fun and exciting, not somewhere where we will be sitting quietly at tables and chatting politely (there's one person we have to invite who won't want to do anything but sit and sip water and we need the venue to balance her out so we all have fun).

Any suggestions would be appreciated. We're cool with going downtown, we just don't want to do the whole bar hopping on 6th thing all night.

See if there's a Blaggards show in town that night. (They're from Houston but I know they play in Austin sometimes.)

(OK, OK, I don't know Austin at all but the bass player is my cousin. )

They were actually up near me one day last year (at a library of all places) but I didn't make it down there. I do have their CD, though (courtesy of my aunt).

if you like the bars, but don't want 6th st craziness, the warehouse district (4th st) is nice. more pub type and upscale bars there. there's also dave & buster's or main event, both on 183. esther's follies is always a good time. check to see what's going on at the alamo drafthouse. if master pancake theater is doing anything while you're in town, it's pretty much a guaranteed good time unless you have no sense of humor. of course, that's only going to kill a couple of hours, but it's a start.
