A minor question

Not life changing or anything, but I have a class that has a weird policy. We have 500 points possible but only 400 count because the lowest test is tossed. As it is I have an 87.5 average..a good solid B..and it is not possible for me to get lower regardless of what I do.

To get higher, on my final..I need at LEAST an 85. From 75-85 would make no difference. 75 or lower would not change my average (I had a bad test week and got a 75 on one of the test).

Should I bother actually showing up for the final. If I get 84 or lower..it is just a wasted day.

Is there a better thing to spend your time on? If you use the time / brainpower on another course and bump that mark up, it might be a better way to pull your overall average up.........

Calculate how much it would pull up your grade with a 100. Is it worth the time? Is a 90 worth the time?

If it does almost nothing for your grade, and even a 100 doesn't pull you up enough to change the overall letter grade, then use the time for something else. If it might change it, think about what it's worth to you.

For me that would really depend on how much work I'd have to put into it.

How confident are you on the material you're being tested on? How much effort have you been putting in all semester? How badly do you need a day off?

I should point out that you have been averaging above an 85.

Anything 85 and above would bump my over all grade to an A, anything under that would do absolutely nada. Yes, besides the one test during a time when I was having trouble with my health (which was a 75) I have gotten a 100, a 88, and a 89. So anything above 85 would be worth doing, anything 84 or under would be me wasting my time.

Well, I'd say, given your record, definitely take the test. Unless you get very sick, you're quite likely to bump it up to an A.

My personal opinion is that you'd be crazy not to take the test and try to improve your grade, especially since nothing you can do on the test can lower your grade.

So I took the test, but will never know the actual score. I will know if it is above 85 by my final grade (ie if my final grade is a B then the test was anywhere 84 or lower..if my final grade is an A then it was 85 or higher)..but otherwise I will never know the actual grade. Technically since there was a 10 point possible bonus question essay question..if I got a 75 on the test and 10 points on the bonus question .... .

I know so far my grades on the other classes are B, and B. So I have a 3.0 MINIMUM guaranteed, even if I totally tanked the final on this class. However, I can slightly improve the gpa if I get a 4.0 on this class

WOOOHOOO time to party like a Rockstar! Another 3.5 (actually a tad better..got a B in a 3 credit class and an A in a 4 credit class..so the 4 is weighted slightly more ) I guess I did get a total of over 85 on that test!!!

It's always better to try to improve, such as improving one's grade, which you did here. And to think you actually considered not taking that test!
