  • Hello Everyone!

Well, This is my first post, so don't expect anything amazing. I work at a low-class jewelry store in my local mall called The Icing, you may have heard of it. Along with selling jewelry, all of us that work there can pierce ears. But, I don't get sucky customers as often as I get downright stupid customers. Today was one of my worst days yet, I believe. Here are a few short stories from today:

    1)
The first one that comes to mind is this lady who comes in talking on her cell phone and trying to talk to me at the same time. (automatic "grrr" in my mind.) She sets her soda down, asks me where something is, and after I tell her, she runs off to get it, knocking her soda over. She looks back over her shoulder at the mess she just made, but doesn't say anything, and then goes to find whatever is was she was looking for. My GOODNESS. Not even a sorry.

    2)
Ok, a little background info first. At my store, we have these deals like Buy one set of earrings, get a second set half off, Buy one hair accessory, get a second half off, and Buy one cosmetic item, get a second half off. Now, I can understand that people might not understand at first that you can't mix these deals... but some people are just stupid about it. For example, later today:

    Me- Me!
    SC- Stupid Customer

SC: (Brings up a hair band and a set of earrings, uh-oh, you can probably already see where this is going to go.)
Me: That comes to *whatever price was*
SC: Did I get one half off? (People seem to need to ask this even if they did get the deal right too...)
Me: No, that deal only is for if you get two of the same type of item. If you like, you can get another pair of earrings or another hair item for half off though.
SC: But if it's the same deal, why can't I get one half off?
Me: It's not the same deal, it's three separate deals for each of the types of items.
SC: But they're all buy one get one half off, shouldn't I get one half off??

.... Goes on for a few minutes, until...

SC: This is CRAP! You guys with your stupid marketing ploy!! What kind of scam is that?!? You can't advertise something and then deny me it! Blah blah....
Me: Well, it doesn't say anywhere that you can mix the items, does it? (And it's true, all the signs have either "earrings" "hair accessories" or "cosmetics" above the Buy 1 get 1 1/2 off.)

Finally she gives in and buys her stuff and leaves. My goodness! I've NEVER had anyone get that upset about it before.

I suppose I'll do one more before I go to sleep tonight.

Ok, this didn't happen today, but it happens on a weekly basis.

So, as I said, we do ear piercings. In my state, you have to be 18 to get your ears pierced without a parent, and we can do any age down to 2 months with a parent. So we get a lot of parents bring in their babies for piercings, and we get a lot of 18 year old coming in to get their ears pierced too.

But, every week or so, a parent will bring in their 5 or 6 year old to get their ears pierced. These are the worst of all. Babies don't know what's going on, and adults and tough enough to take it, but 5 year olds know what's going on, hate it, scream about it, and do everything they can to stop it.

But I'm not mad at the 5 year old. I'm mad at their stubborn parents who think that they HAVE to get their kid's ears pierced TODAY. I've actually sat and watched a parent fight with their kid for close to 45 minutes so she could get her ears pierced. I don't have time for that! Come back in a year or two when their ready.

The worst case happened with me and my assistant manager, because for younger kids we'll usually do a double piercing, where one of us does one ear, and the other does the other ear, so we get it over with in one second and don't have to put up with the kids thrashing about now that they know what is to come.

I came into work at 1:45 that day, and my AM told me to get a double piercing set up. Apparently, they had been waiting a half hour for me to show up.

This girl was the worst!! She obviously didn't want her ears pierced, but her mom had it in her head that TODAY was the day. Her poor daughter would put her hands over her ears, and her mom would hold them down and tell us to go ahead with it, but then the daughter would push one shoulder up on her ear, and he mom would yell at her, and oh my goodness. It never ended. We tried telling the mom over and over that maybe today wasn't a good day, but she insisted. I don't think we finished that piercing until after 3pm sometime. That's over an hour of time spent waiting for these people! We were behind with our work for a few days after that, it was so horrible.

Nothing makes me hate people more than going to work... seriously.

I got my ears pierced when I was 11. My mom didn't tell me where we were going. I was nervous but I was old enough to not freak out when I realized why we were there. I can't imagine what possesses people to traumatize their kids just for a little sparkle.
