I'm not sure what I love more about this forum: being able to unburden myself to an audience who has lived through the same, or the, "Yikes! I guess my SCs aren't so bad!" factor.
Anyway, I work for a well-known women's plus-size clothing chain in a small city in Illinois. I'm lucky; working in a specialty store I'm insulated from much of the suck I read about here. Because we're basically the only store in our rural area that sells trendy, quality plus-size clothing, our customers are pretty appreciative of our wares. Also our store manager is completely kick-ass - hardworking, loyal, and genuinely happy in retail, and my coworkers and assistant managers are pretty fabulous. I have the normal gripes - a clueless district manager, shoplifters, scammers and general sucky customers - but I'm generally happy in my job.
In addition to working retail I've also worked for several non-profits, as both a paid employee and a regular volunteer. I'll have lots of stories about them, too.
Yes, retail and non-profit. Yes, I'm very, very poor and probably always will be. I'm fine with that. As I've learned from my retail and especially my non-profit jobs, money buys neither happiness nor intelligence.
