  • Lady falls asleep at gas pump

Well I must warn you people. This one is a doozy. I'm inside the store putting up Tills when Fuel Center calls. The girl at UScan picks up, they engage in conversation then hang up. UScan comes to me and tells me. Well.

See Fuel Center needs at least 3 bags of kitty litter to clean up some gas. Why so much? A customer at the pump FELL ASLEEP (or past out however you prefer to say it) and gasoline went EVERYWHERE!!!

I'm dead serious. I couldn't believe it at first and called fuel center and asked them what the hell was going on, and sure enough a lady fell asleep and gas went all over the place.

Not if you continue to hold the pump lever down, I guess.

I don't know what happened. I'm guessing it was still pumping when it fell out. I wasn't there, though she paid at the pump so she will be charged for it.

Auto-shut off mechanisms can fail. I've had that happen to me once, though I was at least paying some attention and only spilled a little.

Auto-shutoff doesn't (At least in my experience) work if you pull the nozzle out of the gas tank while holding the lever down. When I (briefly) worked at a gas station, we had a customer pull out the nozzle while still squeezing, and sprayed gas all over the place. Apparently when they pulled it out still pumping gas, they panicked, and tried everything to shut it off EXCEPT let go of the damn lever!

              But I digress.

I suspect she probably toppled over with the nozzle still clutched in her hand, and gas went everywhere when it was pulled out of the tank.

Either you have some REALLY slow pumps, or the lady confused her No-Doz with Advil PM...or something. Wow, falling asleep in the time it takes to pump gas. I second the possible narcolepsy option, but if that were the case, why is she even DRIVING if she isn't properly medicated for it!?

Yes I know all about the auto shut off failing since I work at a gas station and pump the gas for customers. I was thinking she fell asleep in the car while it was running. Still that doesnt rule out the auto shut off failing... but thas why they say to never leave it unattended.

OT but I noticed the other day that our nozzles say they can only be used by licensed drivers only. With our government being the way it is I am waiting for a new law that says we must check each customers license before we sell them gas. lol

oh and I do report drunks if they come in when I am working. I get the plate and direction of travel and call and report it. Not sure if it does any good since I never hear back from the police.
