I can make a perfect theremin noise without the whistle and the hum! It's like singing, but involves more of the throat and tongue than you'd expect. I remember putting on one of those old military winter coats, the ones with the fake fur, and rolling the hood out so my face couldn't be seen... it was my dad's coat and I was short enough that the sleeves went way past my hands, so I was all weird lookin', and Dad tested the new camera from work (no idea why they had it...) and he still has that recording of me looking like an alien invader, complete with surreal soundtrack.
Also, there's a really cool documentary on theremins, and theremin hero-- look 'em up on youtube!
